Alex Ferree wins Herb Scott Memorial at PPMS

ALEX FERREE WINS HERB SCOTT MEMORIAL AT PPMS

Imperial, PA (June 11, 2016) Alex Ferree from Saxonburg was the winner of the Fourth Annual Herb Scott Memorial race on Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.  Ferree led all 41 laps of the main event sanctioned by the UFo Race Championship for the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, earning $4,000 in becoming the fourth different winner of this event.  Other winners on the night of racing to honor Scott, a Western Pennsylvania racing legend, included John Mollick of Toronto, OH in the Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro Late Models.  Todd Weldon from Monongahela notched his second victory on the second completed race night in the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman.  Karlee Kovacs from Carnegie notched her first victory in the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks.  Also going two-for-two in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns was Michael Jackson of South Park.

The redraw for the top ten starting positions for the 41-lap Herb Scott Memorial Race was done by Deek Scott, Herb’s son and an accomplished racer himself. The redraw yielded front row starting positions for John Mollick and Alex Ferree for the event for the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, sanctioned by the UFo Race Championship.  Ferree immediately nosed ahead at the green flag, but the event was quickly slowed on lap 1, as the first of three caution periods in the event occurred as Russell King spun on the backstretch.  Back to green, Ferree again controlled the race with Michael Davis, Mollick, Michael Norris, and Keith Barbara taking up the chase.  Fourth starting Davis closed in on Ferree, getting within a couple car lengths by lap 6.  Davis was challenging for the top spot, but slipped a little too high on lap 7 and made contact with the outside wall.  He would fall back out of contention, before retiring from the event on lap 9.  Mollick would inherit second, and Ferree had a 3.5 second lead wiped out when the second yellow flag of the event waved with 12 laps in.  Defending Herb Scott Memorial winner Jared Miley forced the caution period with a spin in turn three, and under yellow Mollick exited the race to the pit area.  Back to green, Ferree again controlled the lead ahead of fifth starting Keith Barbara.  The third and final caution period of the event came on lap 19 for debris.  Ferree would control the remaining distance in earning the victory, by 1.545 seconds at the finish over Barbara.  King was third, recovering from his lap 1 incident.  Norris was fourth after starting tenth on the grid.  Miley recovered from his lap 12 incident to finish fifth.  Virginia’s Kyle Hardy, division point leader Brandon Burgoon, Jake Gunn, John Flinner, and Bill Kessler rounded out the top ten.  Heat winners were Barbara and Ferree.

The 20-lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro Late Model feature was led to green by Ben Policz and Brandon Burgoon, with Burgoon leading from the start. They would continue to race for the lead, as Policz nosed ahead exiting turn two to take the lead on lap 7.  The first caution period slowed the pace on lap 7, as Policz led again once racing resumed.  On a lap 10 restart, it was sixth starting John Mollick getting a good run to advance to second to battle Policz.  A lap 15 restart would be just what Mollick needed, as he would take advantage of it by advancing to the lead, as the Super Late Model veteran went on to earn his first feature victory in a crate engine car.  Policz settled for a close second, 0.658 seconds behind at the finish.  Daryl Charlier was third, from 12th starting spot.  Justin Lamb advanced from eleventh to fourth, with point leader Kyle Lukon fifth.  Heat winners were Steve Beatty and Mollick.

Nick Kocuba and Rob Shook led the 15-lap Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman feature to the green flag with Kocuba taking the early lead. Eighth starting Todd Weldon worked his way to the front quickly, taking second from Shook on lap 3 and advancing on Kocuba.  Weldon moved to the inside of Kocuba on lap 6 and the pair raced side by side for the race lead.  They crossed the line door to door on lap 8 with Kocuba leading by .019 seconds, but Weldon would nose ahead of Kocuba exiting turn two and would be the race leader on lap 9.  Working lap 9, the fourth place car of Dave McManus made contact with the outside wall in turn one to bring out the first caution period of the event.  On the restart, Weldon nosed ahead to regain the lead, but Ricky Stigerwald made a bid for second that did not work, as he contacted the wall in turn two and exited the event, leaving Kocuba and Shook to battle for second.  After a final restart on lap 13, Weldon again regained command and led the remaining distance to earn the victory by 1.082 seconds.  Shook passed Kocuba at the white flag and would take runner-up honors, with the early leader settling for third.  Jake Simmons was fourth from 11th starting spot, with Brad Koteles fifth.  Shook and Weldon were the heat race winners.

In the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, it was Karlee Kovacs earning her first feature win in the division, since moving up from the Young Guns. Kovacs took the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 10-lap feature event, and on lap 3 was feeling a strong challenge from heat winner Dale Tuche.  But Tuche slipped too high exiting turn four and fell back to third in the three car field.  Kovacs led unchallenged the rest of the way in picking up the victory.  Casey Grumling and Tuche raced for second over the remaining laps, with Grumling earning runner-up honors and taking over the division’s point lead.

Michael Jackson led from start to finish in the 6-lap Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns feature, winning for the second try in two starts. Ben Anton was second.
