Krummert tops Modasaures X at PPMS

GARRETT KRUMMERT TOPS MODASAURES X AT PPMS

Imperial, PA (July 16, 2016)  The Modified Tour for Big Block Modifieds visited Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday night with Garrett Krummert holding off Jeremiah Shingledecker to win the 35-lap “Modasaures X.”  Other winners on the program of racing were John Mollick in the Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro Late Models, A.J. Poljak in the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman, Chas Wolbert in the visiting RUSH Modifieds, Dave Sheriff in the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, and Marc Simmons in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns.

A strong field of 26 cars assembled for the first visit by the Modified Tour in five years.  Rex King, Sr. and Garrett Krummert led the field to the green flag, with Krummert taking the lead at the start of the 35-lap event.  King, Dave Murdick, Brian Swartzlander, and Jeremiah Shingledecker settled into the top five in the early laps as the big field of cars raced all over the spaciously wide racing surface.  Erick Rudolph was on the move forward from seventh starting position, and passed Shingledecker for fifth on lap 7.  Continuing on, he moved to fourth on lap 8, and to third on lap 9.  With ten green flag laps scored, Krummert led King, Rudolph, Murdick, and Shingledecker.  Rudolph passed King for second on lap 11, with Shingledecker continuing his charge by moving to third before the first caution period of the race slowed the action with 13 laps completed.  Krummert, instead of the 6.607 second lead that he had built up, would find Rudolph alongside for the restart.  But Krummert regained command once racing returned, leading Rudolph, Shingledecker, King, and Kevin Bolland.  The next caution period would be for Rudolph who slowed off turn two with 17 laps complete.  Krummert again held control when racing resumed over Shingledecker, Bolland, King, and Swartzlander.  King took third from Bolland, with 19th starting Randy Chrysler entering the top five on lap 19.  What would be the final caution period of the event came on lap 21 for Dave Murdick’s slowing car.  Krummert and Shingledecker would decide the race over the remaining laps.  Krummert was not as dominant as he was in the early laps, and Shingledecker’s mount was getting better.  The pair raced close through bouts with race traffic on lap 29, and Shingledecker nearly pulled off an inside pass with two laps remaining.  He tried one last shot on the final lap, but it was Krummert taking his first victory at the track by .734 seconds over ninth starting Shingledecker.  Bolland was third, with Swartzlander fourth.  Chrysler was fifth as Rex King, Jr., King, Sr., Brad Rapp, Rudolph back from the tail, and Rick Richner completed the top ten.  Bolland, Shingledecker, and Murdick were heat race winners.  The staff and management of PPMS thanks the series and their drivers for their great support of the show.

Scott Schempp and John Mollick led the 20-lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro Late Model feature to the green flag with Mollick leading from the start.  The first of two caution periods in the event came on lap 2, as Steve Beatty moved to second on the restart, bringing Russ Kolesar with him as they both passed Schempp.  Daryl Charlier passed Kolesar for third on lap 7, with the final caution period coming with 8 laps scored.  Mollick again controlled the restart, with Charlier moving to second.  As the laps ticked by, Charlier slowly moved closer to Mollick in the battle for the lead.  On the final lap, Charlier made a hard charge to the inside, but Mollick was able to use his momentum on the outside to win his third feature of the season.  Charlier settled for a close second, and remains the division’s point leader.  Beatty was third ahead of Ben Policz and Justin Lamb. Heat race winners were Lamb and Michael Reft, as that was the highlight of the night for Reft, as he was unable to start the feature race due to problems that developed with his car.

Earning his first feature win of the season, and ninth all time in the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman division was A.J. Poljak.  Poljak started fourth and wasted no time getting to the front, zooming by front row starters Eric Piotrowski and Joe Anthony to lead lap 1.  While Poljak led, Piotrowski and Anthony held second and third as a four car battle developed for the runner up spot.  Ricky Stigerwald advanced to second on lap 7, before the one and only caution period of the event waved on that lap.  Poljak controlled the restart, and went on to win by .633 seconds over Steigerwald.  Third went to Bill Robertson, over point leader Dave McManus and Piotrowski in his best finish of the season.  Heat winners were Poljak and Stigerwald.

Sharing a spot in “Modasaures X,” the RUSH Modifieds made their second of four visits this season with 16 entries starting the 20-lap feature race.  Led to green by Jeremy Weaver and Kyle Martel, Weaver led the first lap before fourth staring Brian Schaffer took over on lap 2.  Sixth starting Chas Wolbert moved to second the next time by, with Weaver holding third until the first caution period of the event on lap 9.  On the double file restart, Wolbert was able to pass Schaffer to take the lead, with last week’s winner Nick Ritchey moving to third.  The final restart came with 14 laps in, as Wolbert again held command over Schaffer.  Ritchey passed Schaffer to take second on lap 17, but it was Wolbert picking up his first victory at the track by 1.273 seconds over Ritchey and Schaffer.  Kole Holden earned his fourth place finish, advancing all the way from 16th starting position.  Fifth went to Chelsie Kriegisch, who earlier in the week earned her first career feature win as part of the races at the Trumbull County Fair in Ohio.  Schaffer and Wolbert took heat race wins.  The RUSH Modifieds return for their third visit on August 13.

Dave Sheriff continued his hot streak by winning for the third straight week in the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, with a season high of seven entries.  Sharing row 3 with heat race winner Joe Podolinsky on the starting grid, it was a mad dash to the front as the field went four wide into turn three working the first lap.  Sheriff was the first one to advance through the field, and he would go on to lead all 12 laps over Podolinsky, Jacob Wiser, point leader Dale Tuche, and John Wiser in newly finished race car, still awaiting a coat of paint.

In the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, it was a familiar car in victory lane for the third time at the end of 6 laps, but a new face.  Along with O.B. Huff’s driving his number 83 to victory, Vinnie Zymroz won in the car two weeks ago, but tonight it was Marc Simmons accomplishing the fete to pick up his first career feature win.  Simmons quickly advanced to the top spot on his way to his first win over point leader Michael Jackson, Ben Anton, and Tyler Tennant.

Racing continues at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday night, July 23.  The Diehl Automotive Super Late Models will return to headline the racing program.  The Alternative Power Sources LHSS Race Saver winged Sprints will make a special visit for the only time in 2016, their third all-time visit.  The Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro Late Models will compete in a Summer Sizzler event.  The Sportsman, Hobby Stocks, and Young Guns will also be in competition, and there will be an open Four Cylinder division race.  The gates open at 5:00, with warm-ups at 6:00 and racing at 7:00.  The track is located west of the city of Pittsburgh, just south of the Noblestown exit of U.S. Route 22, or 170 Kelso Road in Imperial, PA, for GPS purposes.  The track phone is 724-695-3363 on race days, or call 412-279-RACE.  For complete information please visit the track website at www.ppms.com .
