Gary Kriess Is PPMS King Of “Spring Wing Fling”

Gary Kriess of Butler was the big winner as Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing of Carnegie presented the running of the “Spring Wing Fling” on Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.  In the 410 Sprint feature event, Kriess led the last four laps after inheriting the top spot when race leader Jordan Harble experienced problems that forced him from the event.  Sharing top billing in the Spring Wing Fling was the Alternative Power Sources Allegheny Sprint Tour, with the victory going to Kyle Colwell from Knox.  Other winners on a busy night of racing included Justin Lamb from Findlay Twp. in the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, Dave McManus of Elizabeth in the Sunoco Sportsman, Levi Spinneweber from Butler in the Super6 Late Models, Adam Ferree of Jefferson Hills in the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Pittsburgh’s Justin Clark in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and Matthew Rubright from Harmony in the CruiseAmerica Open Fours.

A field of 16 of the 410 winged Sprints started the 20 lap main event, with Dan Kuriger and Bradley Howard leading the field to green.  Kuriger took the lead at the start, leading the first four rounds before Jordan Harble blasted by on lap 5.  Once in front, Harble distanced himself from the field, leaving Kuriger to race for second with Gary Kriess.  Kriess made the pass for second on lap 12, but at lap 15, Harble had what appeared to be an insurmountable seven second lead.  However, a lap later, his mount slowed and rolled to a stop to force the lone caution period of the event.  Kriess would go on to make himself the 47th different winner in the Sprint division at the track in the 99th all time open sprint event.  It was his second win at the track, adding to a limited sprint feature win.  Kuriger was second, 1.950 seconds behind at the finish.  Brandon Matus was third over Howard and Jack Sodeman, Jr.  Heat winners were Sodeman and John Garvin, after Sodeman had earlier destroyed the track record in the hot lap/time trial session.  Sodeman’s new record lap was 14.784, crushing the former record of 15.182.

Kyle Colwell took the win in the 12 lap feature for the Alternative Power Sources Allegheny Sprint Tour.  Grabbing the lead from Robbie Bartchy with an outside pass in turn two, Colwell took the lead on lap 3 and pulled away from the field before a lap 6 caution period.  Greg Dobrosky pulled up to challenge in the closing laps, but settled for a close second, .769 seconds behind at the flag.  Zach Hawk, Bartchy, and George Frederick filled the top five.  Dobrosky was the heat race winner.

The 20 lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model feature had John Mollick and Justin Lamb leading the field on the starting grid, with Mollick leading from the start.  A single caution period slowed the pace with five laps complete, but Mollick continued to set the pace.  With 13 complete, Lamb quickly caught Mollick, and made an inside pass off of turn four to take the lead on lap 14.  Mollick closed in again in the closing laps as they battled race traffic, but it was Armed Forces veteran Lamb celebrating the special victory on Memorial Day weekend.  His Beer & Pop 4 Less sponsored 93X suffered an issue just after taking the checkered flag, spewing steam in turn two on the cool down lap.  Mollick was a very close second, .166 seconds behind.  Ben Policz was third over Steve Beatty and Bill Kessler.  Last week’s winner Daryl Charlier, who exited the race in the top five on lap 8, and Lamb were the heat race winners.

After finishing third and second in the previous two Sunoco Sportsman features, it was only fitting that Dave McManus improved by one more position to win the 15 lap feature race.  Starting fourth, he got to the lead quickly on lap 1, getting by front row starters A.J. Poljak and Jarrod Westover.  Just a single yellow flag slowed the event, a debris caution on lap 1.  Poljak challenged McManus in the early laps, but McManus pulled away as halfway approached.  Bob Schwartzmiller started ninth and took second from rom Poljak at halfway, and began cutting into the lead that McManus had built up.  However, he slowed with two laps remaining, leaving McManus to take a 2.950 second win over Poljak.  Kyle Shannon was third ahead of Jackson Humanic and Bobby Heim in the final tune up before next week’s prestigious Ed Laboon Memorial.  Humanic and Jeff Broniszewski took heat wins.

Levi Spinneweber led the entire distance in winning the 12 lap feature for the Super6 Late Models.  Starting outside of row 1, he took the lead at the start, winning over heat race winner Justin Koebler, Frank McFeaters, Jim Thompson who dropped out with a flat tire, and Mike Spinneweber who brought out the lone caution flag on lap 1 after making contact with the outside wall in turn one.

With four cars starting the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stock feature, it turned out to be an eventful 12 lap feature.  Karlee Kovacs took the lead at the start, leading the first two laps before problems forced her to the pits.  Stephen Shelpman took the lead at this point, and built up a comfortable lead as he appeared to be on the way to his first feature win.  However, he started experiencing problems with his car in the closing laps, allowing Adam Ferree to close in.  Ferree passed Shelpman at the white flag, as Shelpman’s car failed him.  Ferree, no relation to the famous racing family of the same name, would take the win in his first start over Casey Grumling.

In the 8 lap Imperial Heights Garage Young Gun feature, Justin Clark took the win giving him two wins in two starts this seasomn, and his third straight after winning the final event in 2016.  It was a close battle for second, with Ben Anton holding off Kayla McManus by a car length, with Kyle Janas behind them.

Matthew Rubright led the entire 8 lap distance in the CruiseAmerica Open Four feature event for his first feature win at the track, over Tom Anton, John Gill, and Dale Rubright.
