Jared Miley Wins At PPMS

Jared Miley from Pittsburgh was the winner of the 20 lap feature event for the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models on Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.  Also picking up victories were John Mollick from Toronto, OH in the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, Bob Schwartzmiller of Robinson Township in the Sunoco Sportsman, Levi Spinneweber of Butler in the Super6 Late Models, Dave Sheriff of Imperial in the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Kayla McManus of Elizabeth in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and John Gill of Burgetttown in the CruiseAmerica Open Fours.

The 20 lap Diehl Automotive Super Late Model feature had Jon Hodgkiss and Tommy Schirnhofer on the front row of the starting grid, but third starting Mike Norris slipped by both to lead lap 1.  Jared Miley passed Hodgkiss for second on lap 2, and the two drivers distanced themselves from a good battle for the third spot.  Norris had a 2.913 second lead on lap 7, but his mount slowed the next time by as the yellow waved when Miley hit the line at lap 10, as Norris stopped just short of the exit to the pits.  Miley had smooth sailing from there, as Ryan Montgomery won the battle for second, taking it on lap 11.  John Flinner made a charge in the closing laps, taking third from Jake Gunn on lap 17 and making a late charge on Montgomery.  But at the checkered flag it was the high flying Miley by 11.859 seconds over Montgomery, Flinner, Gunn, and Schirnhofer in his season debut.  Heat winners were Miley and Norris.

The non-stop 20 lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model main went to defending champion John Mollick for the first time this season.  From outside row one, Mollick passed Josh Stoica at the drop of the green and quickly distanced himself from the field.  Third starting Justin Lamb moved to second as eighth starting Daryl Charlier advanced to third.  Mollick’s lead was 7.662 seconds at halfway as Lamb and Charlier raced hard for second.  Charlier suffered a flat tire on lap 17 as he exited the event at that point.  At the flag it was Mollick by 9.902 seconds over Lamb.  Ben Policz was third, over Steve Beatty, and Mike Reft.  Jake Gunn, Christian Schneider in Ken Maniecki’s 1ST, Friday night’s Attica Raceway Park sprint winner Tim Shaffer, Tony White, and Bill Kessler filled the top ten over 17 entries.  Beatty and Policz were heat winners.

Former Sunoco Sportsman division champions Nick Kocuba and Bill Robertson led the 15 lap feature to green but fourth starting Todd Weldon slipped past the 2013 and 2015 champs to lead lap 1.  Weldon pulled away as the two former champs raced with Danny Rich in swapping spots battling for second.  Weldon had a 4.771 second lead at lap 9, however, his 2017 terrible luck continued as his car broke crossing the line on lap 10, forcing the lone caution period of the event.  Kocuba inherited the lead for the restart over Rich, Robertson, and seventh starting Bob Schwartzmiller.  Rich would lead lap 11, with Schwartzmiller getting by on the inside to lead lap 12.  With Schwartzmiller low and Rich high, they raced the closing laps with Schwartzmiller getting a .477 second win over Rich.  Kocuba was third, ahead of 12th starting A.J. Poljak and Robertson.  Heat winners were Weldon and Schwartzmiller.

The 12 lap Super6 Late Model feature went to heat race winner Levi Spinneweber.  Starting on the pole, Spinneweber led the entire distance to win by a straightaway over Justin Koebler, Mike Spinneweber, Jim Thompson, and Frank McFeaters.

Dave Sheriff won his second straight in the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, foiling the effort of heat race winner Stephen Shelpman.  Karlee Kovacs and Shelpman led seven starters for the 12 lap event, with Shelpman the early leader.  Shelpman led the first five laps, but Sheriff made an outside pass on the backstretch to take the lead on lap 6.  Shelpman finished a close second over Tyler Fox, Kovacs, and Butch Black.

Landmark event number 200 in the history of the Young Gun division saw Kayla McManus become the 40th different winner, since the first event in 2006.  She defeated Ben Anton and Kyle Janas for her first win.

John Gill was a first time winner in the CruiseAmerica Open Fours, leading the entire distance over Tom Anton, Matthew Rubright, Dale Rubright, and Justin Clark.
