Policz Over Wilson On Colussy Night At PPMS
Ben Policz from Rices Landing defeated Eric Wilson to win the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model Sizzler Series event, highlighting Colussy Chevrolet Night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Brandon Blackshear from Hubbard, OH was the winner of the Inaugural “Econo Mod Classic.” The CarSmile Wiper Blades “Thunder on the Dirt” Vintage Racing Series was on hand for their annual visit, with Rick Majka, from Fredonia, NY winning. Other feature winners were Garrett Krummert from Ellwood City in the Super6 Late Models, Stephen Shelpman from Pleasant Hills in the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Ben Anton from Jefferson Hills in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and April Tennant from Colliers, WV in the CruiseAmerica Open Fours.
The 25 lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model Sizzler Series event started with dash winner Eric Wilson on the pole position, flanked by Ben Policz. Wilson led from the start, with Policz, Justin Lamb, Steve Beatty, and Bryan Hoffman taking up the chase. Wilson led at the halfway mark with 13 laps complete, by 1.415 seconds, when the lone caution period of the event slowed the pace. Wilson chose the outside groove for the restart, but Policz muscled by on the inside to take the lead on the restart. Policz led Wilson by around a second through the remaining laps, but at the white flag the leaders had caught race traffic. Wilson charged past Policz off turn two working the traffic on the last lap. But Policz passed him back working the final turns, taking a .415 second victory, his second of the season. Beatty was third after taking the position on the final restart. Point leader Lamb was fourth, as he also clinched the Sizzler Series title. Bill Kessler was fifth, as Mike Reft, Hoffman, Josh Stoica, Paul Jablonski, and Pete Wearing rounded out the top ten. Heat winners were Wilson and Chuck Medved.
The Inaugural “Econo Mod Classic,” the first visit by the Econo Mod division, brought a field of 14 cars. Mitchell Wright and Tyler Frankenberry won the two heat races. The top three finishers from each heat made up the dash, with Brandon Blackshear winning it to earn the pole position for the 20 lap main event. Blackshear would lead the entire distance in earning the $1000 first place money. Though the race started slowly with four caution periods in the first six laps, the final 14 lap distance ran without incident. Wright stayed close to Blackshear until the closing laps, as he was 1.220 seconds behind with five laps remaining. But Blackshear pulled away over the closing laps, as Wright was 3.168 seconds behind at the finish. Ty Rhoades started 12th, and pitted after advancing to third in four laps. From the tail again, he rallied to finish third, passing Buzz Seitz on lap 16. Behind Seitz in fourth was Steve Haefke. Matt Alexander, Brian Huchko, Eric Reinwald, Richard Chess, Jr., and Josh Ferry filled the top ten. PPMS sends their thanks to the race teams that visited, to Brian Huchko and Josh Christopher for organizing the event, and the numerous sponsors that supported the event.
Les Myers and Matt Hildebrand led the 12 lap CarSmile Wiper Blades “Thunder on the Dirt” Vintage Racing Series event to green with Myers grabbing the early lead. Myers spun on the backstretch working lap 1, as Dale Zimmer and Fred Hildebrand were also involved. All but Hildebrand were able to continue, after what would be the only caution period of the event. Fifth starting Bill Watson inherited the lead, before third starting Rick Majka moved up to challenge. Majka made an inside pass off of turn four to take the lead at lap 4. Watson stayed close as the laps clicked by, and made an inside bid on the inside of turn four on the final lap. At the checkered flag, it was Majka by a nose over Watson. Myers recovered to get third, over Josh Seiple and Matt Hildebrand. Hank Coles was the top finishing Sportsman car in sixth. Watson and Coles were heat winners.
The 10 lap Super6 Late Model feature was bolstered by a couple of guest drivers, as Big Block Modified drivers Garrett Krummert and Dave Murdick got behind the wheel of the six cylinder powered spec racers. Murdick led the first two laps of the feature before Krummert made an outside pass on the backstretch to take over on lap 3. Krummert, who won the two Modified features at the track this season, would race on to pick up the feature win. Levi Spinneweber settled for a close second, with Murdick third. Frank McFeaters was fourth, exiting on lap 6. Mike Spinneweber failed to start the main, after hitting the wall in the heat race, that was won by Krummert.
A season high 11 cars were on hand for the 12 lap Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stock feature. Stephen Shelpman started fourth, and slipped past both front row starters Casey Grumling and Steve Pyeritz to lead lap 1. Third starting Justin Shipley moved up to challenge, making his best bid on lap 7. A backstretch incident on lap 10 brought the lone caution period, setting up a two lap dash to the finish. Shelpman held off all challenges to collect his third win of the season, with Shipley a close second. Eric Goldberg made his season debut by finishing third. Point leader Karlee Kovacs advanced from tenth starting spot to get fourth, with Andrew Kostelnik fifth in his first start of the season. Heat winners were Shelpman and Shipley.
The 12 lap CruiseAmerica Open Four feature started with Dale Rubright and April Tennant leading the field to green, with Tennant taking the lead at the start. Her husband Bill won a three wide battle for second on lap 3, and he closed in on April. April held strong using the outside line, with Bill challenging on the inside. They were side by side at the line on lap 9, with April just inches ahead. The lone yellow flag of the event came on lap 9, for point leader Matthew Rubright who lost power. April went on to take the win, her second of the season, with Bill a close second. Andy Garlinger was third. After a close battle throughout the race, John Gill nosed Aaron Karasack for fourth. Garlinger and April Tennant took the heats.
In the 6 lap Imperial Heights Garage Young Gun feature event, it was point leader Ben Anton earning his fifth feature win of the season. Kyle Janas finished a close second.
