Point Races Ending, Pittsburgher Approaching At PPMS

Racing returns to Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 30, for the final point race for 2017.  The “Tune-Up 20” will be run for Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, in their final point race in preparation for the upcoming Pittsburgher 100.  The RUSH Modifieds will make their final visit of the season, and there will be Kids Bike Races.  Point racing will conclude for the season for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, Sunoco Sportsman, Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and CruiseAmerica Open Fours.

The 2017 racing season will conclude with the running of the 29th Annual Pittsburgher 100.  Qualifying events will take place on Friday, October 6, with features running on Saturday, October 7.  Highlighting the action will be the 100 lap, $20,000 to win, Pittsburgher 100 featuring the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.  Joining the program will be the 30 lap Bill Hendren Memorial for the Sweeney Chevrolet RUSH Dirt Late Model Marquee Series paying $2500 to the winner, and the CruiseAmerica PENNational for the Homak Manufacturing Penn/Ohio Pro Stock Series paying $1500 to the winner.  The Lucas Oil Late Model portion of the event will be taped to be shown on television.  It is currently scheduled to air on MAV-TV at 6:00 ET on Thursday, November 23, Thanksgiving night, and on the NBC Sports Network on Sunday, December 17 at 3:00 ET.

Two drivers have already clinched 2017 point championships.  The Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model champion is Justin Lamb from Findlay Township, his first point championship.  His 93X car is a Rocket Chassis, sponsored by Beer & Pop 4 Less, Falconi Family of Dealerships, Gumpher Electrical Services, Main Street Brew House, Ted McWilliams Auto Body, The Hangar Bar & Grill, and Nijel Auto Solutions.  Defending his 2016 championship for his second straight Imperial Heights Garage Young Gun championship is Ben Anton of Jefferson Hills.  His Chevy Cavalier numbered 13 is sponsored by Jefferson Hills Lawn Equipment, Bmarc School of Driving, Army's Transmission, and Saunders Heating & Cooling.

The other four division championships will be determined on Saturday.  In the competitive PPMS point system, a maximum point night is worth 100 points, but participation in a racing program earns a minimum of 70 points.  Jon Hodgkiss leads Matt Dobnak by 11 points in the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, with Chris Lander and Tony Musolino still mathematically in contention.  Defending champion Dave McManus leads the Sunoco Sportsman standings by 20 over Danny Rich, with A.J. Poljak and Bill Robertson still in contention.  The closest race is in the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, where Stephen Shelpman leads defending champion Casey Grumling by 22 points, with Karlee Kovacs two points behind him.  With a lead of 31 points, Matthew Rubright needs to simply pull onto the track under his own power to earn the inaugural CruiseAmerica Open Four championship, to outgain Tom Anton and Dale Rubright.

The RUSH Modifieds will also be in competition on Saturday, which will be their sixth visit of the season.  Kole Holden won his second feature of the season last Saturday.  Rocky Kugel, Chas Wolbert, and Jessica Kriegisch have been the other winners.

The 2017 fuels incentive continues to race on at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.  Sponsored by Brian Bazell of Bazell Race Fuels, the fuel incentive program is open to each week to any race team in the RUSH Late Model, Sunoco Sportsman, and RUSH Modified divisions.  To be entered, teams must purchase at least five gallons of fuel at the track to be eligible, plus carry a Sunoco decal.  The highest finishing car that is entered and eligible will earn five gallons of the fuel that they purchased on each race night.
