Miley wins the sixth annual Herb Scott Memorial

Imperial, PA

With the heat index close to 100 degrees, it was a barn burner for the sixth annual Herb Scott Memorial. Kyle Lee (2T) of Mercersburg set the fast time during qualifying with a time of 18.442, and Michael Norris (72) of Sarver was a close second with a time of 18.563 - a difference of 0.121 seconds. Pole-sitter and two-time defending champion Alex Ferree (4) of Saxonburg was looking for his third Herb Scott Memorial win in a row. To Ferree’s outside starting in second was Jared “The Jet” Miley (10) of Pittsburgh. In the next row starting in third was Michael Norris (72) of Sarver, and starting fourth was Ross Robinson (7R) of Georgetown, Delaware. When the green flag dropped, Ferree (4) found himself in a three-way battle for the lead with Miley (10) and Norris (72). As they ran three wide through turn four and onto the front stretch, Norris (72) would take the lead, followed by Miley (10) in second, Ferree(4) in third, Robinson (7R) in fourth, and Ryan Montgomery (12) of Fairmont, West Virginia in fifth. Norris (72) was living up to his nickname as he began to pick off lapped traffic by the seventh lap with Miley (10) and Ferree (4) in tow. At the halfway point, Norris (72) was still leading the field, Miley (10) was still in second, Ferree (4) was still in third, Montgomery (12) was still in fourth, and Lee (2T) was in fifth. Norris (72) appeared to have the race in the bag when lap 23 saw trouble for the young driver as he blew a tire and tagged the wall along the back stretch, bringing out the event’s only caution. On the restart, Miley (10) would lead the field, followed by Ferree (4) in second, Lee (2T) in third, Montgomery (12) in fourth, and Colton Flinner (75) of Allison Park in fifth. When the green flag dropped, Miley (10) would lead the remaining seven laps of the race, picking up his second Herb Scott Memorial victory of his career. He was followed to the line by Lee (2T) in second, Ferree (4) in third, Robinson (7R) in fourth, Montgomery (12) in fifth, Flinner (75) in sixth, Matt Cosner (66C) in seventh, Kirk Baker (11) in eighth, Jon Hodgkiss (69) in ninth, and Kelvin Kohan (15) rounded out the top ten. Norris (72) never returned to the race, finishing eleventh and seven laps down. Heat race winners were Norris (72) and Miley (10)

In the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, defending champion Justin Lamb (93X) of Findlay Township started on the pole. To his outside starting second was Tony White (27T) of Hopewell Township. Making up the second row starting third was Mike Reft (9R) of Whitehall, and to his outside starting in fourth was Bryan Hoffman (15H) of Imperial while Josh Stoica (22J) of Newcumberland, West Virginia rounded out the top five. When the green flag dropped, Reft (9R) quickly took the second spot from White (27T), forcing him back to third, while Lamb (93X) led the field. The event’s first caution took place on lap six, and Lamb (93X) chose the inside on the restart with Reft (9R) to his outside in second, Ron Hall (01) in third, Logan Zarin (1Z) in fourth, and Nico DiBecco (F1) in fifth. On the next lap, Lamb (93X) would continue to lead the field with Reft (9R) in tow. DiBecco (F1) moved up to third, Zarin (1Z) up to fourth, and the “Midway MIssile” Daryl Charlier (12C) moved up to fifth. On lap nine, Charlier (12C) shot around Zarin (1Z) in turn two, taking the fourth spot. Charlier(12C) was on the move again on lap 12 and successfully completed an inside slider on DiBecco (F1) in turn four to take the third spot. Lamb (93X) began to contend with lapped traffic by lap 13, and on the same lap the field saw the event’s second caution when Matt Dobnak (42), Jake Gunn (14G), and Tony White (27T) were involved in a crash coming out of turn two. Again, Lamb (93X) chose the inside on the restart with Reft(9R) in second, Charlier (12C) in third, DiBecco (F1) in fourth, and Zarin (1Z) in fifth. Officials called back the restart, and Mike Duritsky (90J) and Tommy Schirnhofer (08) were docked two spots for passing before the cone. As fast as the green came out, the field saw the third caution as the 114G of Zach Gunn spun out, then Ben Policz (14B) also spun out a few seconds later. On the restart, Reft (9R) would take the lead from Lamb (93X), forcing him to second, followed by Charlier (12C) in third, Zarin (1Z) in fourth, and John Mollick (60M) who made his way up to fifth. With the checkered flag waving, Reft (9R) would pick up his first win of the season, followed by Lamb (93X) in second, Charlier (12C) in third, Garrett Paugh (03) in fourth, Zarin (1Z) in fifth, DiBecco (F1) in sixth, Mollick (60M) in seventh, Hall (01) in eighth, Schirnhofer (08) in ninth, and Jabo Jablonski (03) in tenth. Paugh (03), DiBecco (F1), and Reft (9R) won the heat races.

In the 15-lap Pro Stock feature, Greg Beach (33X) of Chicora started on the pole. To his outside starting in second was Noah Brunell (55N). Making up the second row were Eric Piotrowski (7) in third, and Bill Robertson (1B) in fourth. The event’s first caution came out on lap two, slowing the pace. Beach (33X) chose the outside on the restart with Brunell (55N) to his inside in second, Piotrowski (7) in third, Robertson (1B) in fourth, Cam Kraisinger (47) in fifth, and Jeff Broniszewski (08) in sixth. When the green came out, Broniszewski (08) moved up to third and Dave McManus (114) moved up to fifth. Broniszewski (08) was on the move again on lap four when he moved into second behind Beach(33X). The event’s second caution happened on the eighth lap when the 18 of Martin Spain spun out in turn one. The restart had Beach (33x) in first, Broniszewski (08) in second, Kraisinger (47) in third, Brunell (55N) in fourth, and McManus (114) in fifth. When the green flag dropped, track officials weren’t happy with the restart so the field was forced to give it another try. Broniszewski (08) would take the lead on lap ten and hold off the rest of the field, picking up his first win of the season. He was followed by Beach (33X) in second, McManus (114) in third, Brunell (55N) in fourth, Danny Rich (67X) in fifth, Kraisinger (47) in sixth, Piotrowski (7) in seventh, Joe Gumbach (5) in eighth, Jake Hoelle (6) in ninth, and Drew Koteles (64K) rounded out the top ten. Brunell (55N) and Beach (33X) won the heat races.

Stephen Shelpman (17S) of Pleasant Hills has been unstoppable in the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock class. Shelpman (17S) won the previous four features heading into the night. He had car trouble during the heat race when the carburetor bolts came loose and got lodged in the intake manifold. The 17’S crew was able to repair the car in time for the 12-lap feature. The feature had Adam Ferree (29) of Jefferson Hills on the pole with Casey Grumling (77X) of Elrama to his outside in second. Frank Fazio (1ST) started in third, and Ben Anton (13) started in fourth. Shelpman (17S) started last. By the second lap, Shelpman (17S) was already up to third place behind Grumling (77X). Lap four saw the event’s first caution and, on the restart, Ferree (29) would retain the lead with Grumling (77X) in second, and Shelpman (17S) in third. Two laps later, Ferree (29) and Grumling (77X) were battling for the lead. Ferree (29) managed to hold on to first, but Grumling (77X) dropped down to third when Shelpman (17S) took over second place. Shelpman (17S) and Ferree (29) were putting on quite a show with some of the best racing of the evening as they battled for the lead. Shelpman (17S) would take over the lead on lap 10 and never looked back, picking up his fifth win of the season and fifth win in a row. He was followed to the line by Grumling (77X) in second, Fazio (1ST) in third, Ferree (29) in fourth, Anton (13) in fifth, Randy DeBerdinis (121) in sixth, John Hollister (11) in seventh, and Karlee Kovacs (221K) in eighth with a DNF.  The heat race winner was Ferree (29)

The “Dominator” Andy Garlinger (R88) of Hopedale, Ohio continued to dominate the Black Label Business Center Open 4’s. In the eight-lap feature, Justin Clark (02) started on the pole with Tom Anton (64) of Jefferson Hills in second, and Garlinger (R88) in third. By the second lap of the race, Garlinger (R88) had taken over the lead with Anton (64) in second, and Clark (02) in third. On lap five, Garlinger (R88) had a whole straightaway lead on the rest of the field, and he would cruise his way to victory in a dominating fashion. He was followed by Anton (64) in second, and Clark (02) in third. This was Garlinger’s (R88) fifth win of the season and fifth win in a row. Open 4’s did not run a heat race.

In the Three Rivers Karting Young Guns 8-lap feature, Susie Rudolph (55) of Stubenville, Ohio looked to pick up her first win of the season. Rudolph (55) started on the pole with Frank Magill (05) of Jefferson Hills to her outside in second, Tony Magill (44) of Jefferson Hills started in third, and Kyle Janus (88) of Coraopolis started in fourth. On the first lap, Kyle Janus (88) went to the pits with an unknown issue, and he came back out on lap three. Rudolph (55) continued to lead through lap six with F. Magill (05) in second, T. Magill (44) in third, and Janus (88) in fourth. On the last lap of the race, and with Rudolph (55) still leading, she blew a tire and was forced to enter the pits and end her night. With Rudolph (55) out of the race, F. Magill (05) would pick up his third win of the season. He was followed by Rudolph (55) in second, T. Magill (44) in third one lap down, and Janus (88) in fourth three laps down. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
