Reutzel dethrones Stewart at PPMS

Imperial, PA

It was a beautiful evening at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile for Tony Stewart’s Arctic Cat All-Stars. With rain threatening to derail the program, PPMS would see some of the biggest names in 410 all-star sprint racing. Aaron Reutzel (87) from Clute, Texas picked up the win Friday night at Eriez Speedway, and is also the current series wins leader. Reutzel (87) set the fast time during qualifying, with a time of 16.024. Points leader, Carson Macedo (3G) from Lemoore, California wasn’t far behind with a time of 16.150, a 0.126 second difference. Pittsburgh’s own Tim Shaffer (49X) set the third fastest time at 16.207. In the 25-lap feature, Macedo (3G) would be the pole-sitter after winning the six lap dash. Starting to his outside in second was Reutzel (87). Making up the second row was Paul McMahan (13) from Nashville, Tennessee starting in third, and Cole Duncan (22C) from Lockbourne, Ohio would start in fourth, while Shaffer (49X) would start in fifth, and last year’s winner Tony Stewart (14) from Columbus, Indiana would start in sixth, rounding out the top three rows. When the green flag dropped, Reutzel (87) would take an early lead and already started to pick his way through lapped traffic by lap three. Lap nine saw the event’s lone caution, slowing the pace for the 35 of Tyler Esh who had car trouble and leaked oil down the entire front-stretch. The track crew did an outstanding job at getting the mess cleaned up in a timely manner and the single foul restart would have Reutzel (3G) leading the field with Macedo (3G) in second, Dave Blaney (70) from High Point, North Carolina in third, Stewart (14) was in fourth, but would go to the pits during the caution. He would soon return while still under caution, but was forced to restart in fifteenth. With the oil cleaned up, it was back to green for the field, and Reutzel (87) continued his domination over a steller field of all-stars. Reutzel (87) was still leading on lap 13 with Macedo (3G) in tow, running in second, Duncan (22C) was in third, Blaney (70) was in fourth, McMahan (13) was in fifth, while fifth-starting Shaffer (49X) had fallen back to eighth. After being forced to restart fifthteenth, Stewart (14) had made his way back up to twelvth by lap nineteen, but he would surrender last year’s crown to Reutzel (87), who was on a rail, leading the 22-car field to victory, and sweeping the I-79 shootout weekend. He was followed to the line by Macedo (3G) in second, Blaney (70) in third, McMahan (13) in fourth, Chad Kemenah (10H) in fifth, Duncan (22C) in sixth, Lee Jacobs (81) in seventh, Shaffer (49X) in eighth, Parker Price-Miller (4) in ninth, Jac Haudenschild (3) in tenth, Gary Taylor (11) in eleventh, and Tony Stewart (14) would round out the top 12. McMahan (13), Stewart (14), and Reutzel (87) won the heat races.

In the RUSH Sprint Car 15-lap feature, Arnie Kent (18) from New Castle started on the pole. To his outside, and starting second was Shawn Smith (36) from Seneca. Making up the second row was Zach Morrow (27) from Gibsonia starting in third, and David Hawkins (27D) from Lower Burrell started in fourth, while Gale Ruth Jr. (1C) from Pleasantville started in fifth, Chad Ruhlman (87R) from Bemus Point, New York started in sixth, Brandon Hawkins (27H) from Salina started in seventh, Scott Hawkins (37) from Sarver started in eighth, Tyler Powell (35) from Cochranton started in ninth, Steve Cousins (56) from Eldred started in tenth, and Bradley Blackshear (19) from Brookefield, Ohio made up the eleven car field. When the green flag dropped, B. Hawkins (27H) and Cousins (56) got together in turn one, bringing out the yellow flag. A complete restart would ensue and the field would remain the same. Morrow (27) took the lead on the restart, but would soon give up the first spot to Ruhlman (87) who would cruise his way to the first ever RUSH Sprint feature victory at PPMS. Following him to the line was Morrow (27) in second, Ruth (1C) in third, Kent (18) in fourth, S. Hawkins (37) in fifth, Smith (36) in sixth, Blackshear (19) in seventh, D. Hawkins (27D) in eighth, Powell (35) in ninth. B. Hawkins (27H) and Cousins were a DNF after their incident in turn one at the beginning of the race. The heat race winners were Kent (18) and Ruhlman (87R).

In the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, Christian Schneider (1ST) from Burgettstown started on the pole. To his outside and starting second was Ben Policz (14B) from Rices Landing. John Mollick (60M) from Toronto, Ohio started in third, while Logan Zarin (1Z) from Pittsburgh started in fourth, Mike Reft (9R) from Whitehall started in fifth, and Matt Dobnak (42) from West Mifflin rounded out the top three rows. When the green flag dropped, track officials called a false start, forcing the 16-car field to line up for a second attempt. With a good start at the line, Policz (14B) would take an early lead, knocking Schneider (1ST) back to second. With Policz (14B) leading, and Schneider (1ST) in tow, eighth-starting Justin Lamb (93X) from Findlay Township moved up to fourth by lap three, while Daryl Charlier (12C) from Midway was on the move as well. Charlier (12C) moved into sixth place by lap seven after starting twelfth, and he moved up to fifth by the tenth lap. Policz (14B) continued to lead the field with Schneider (1ST) in tow while a three-way battle for third was taking place between Mollick (60M), Lamb (93X), and Charlier (12C) on lap 16. Charlier (12C) would win the battle, taking the third spot behind Schneider (1ST), but the night belonged to Policz (14B) who would lead the field to his first PPMS victory of the season. He was followed to the finish line by Schneider (1ST) in second, Charlier (12C) in third, Mollick (60M) in fourth, Lamb (93X) in fifth, Reft (9R) in sixth, Nico Dabecco (F1) in seventh, Tommy Schirnhofer (8) in eighth,  Zarin (1Z) in ninth, and Dobnak (42) rounded out the top ten. Schneider (1ST) and Reft (9R) won the heat races.
