Lukon Wins Herb Scott Memorial

For immediate release,

Imperial, PA

It was extremely hot at PPMS but that didn’t deter drivers and race fans alike for the 8th Annual Herb Scott Memorial. PPMS would see qualifying, seven heat races, two b-mains, a six-lap dash, and six feature events. After starting fifth, Kyle Lukon (184), from Burgettstown, would bring home the win in the 30-lap Herb Scott Memorial for the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model Dirt Series. Jared Kane (7K), from Scenery Hill, would pick up the win in the RUSH Late Model non-qualifiers feature, while Mike Harris (18), from Bridgeville, would grab his first career victory in the PPMS Pro Stock division. Casey Grumling (77X), from Elrama, would pick up his second win of the season in the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock 12-lap feature, while Andy Garlinger (R88), from Hopedale, Ohio, continued to dominate in the Four Cylinder Division. Susie Rudolph (55), from Steubenville, Ohio, also continued to dominate the Young Guns Division, picking up another win.

Ben Policz (14B), from Rices Landing, would set the fast time for the 8th Annual Herb Scott Memorial for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series. Policz (14B) had a fast time of 19.732, while Lukon (184) was a close second with a time of 19.869. The six-lap dash would consist of eight drivers with Lukon (184) and Policz (14B) starting fifth and sixth respectively. When the green flag dropped in the dash, Jeremy Wonderling (3J), from Wellsville, New York, would keep the lead after starting on the pole. Wonderling (3J) would lead all six laps of the dash, ensuring him the pole position in the 30-lap feature event.

In the 30-lap feature event for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, Christian Schneider, from Warren, Ohio, would start in the second spot next to Wonderling (3J). Wayne Robertson (20), from Avoca, New York would start in third, while John Mollick (60M), from Toronto, Ohio would start in fourth. Making up the third row was Lukon (184) in fifth, and Policz (14B) in sixth. When the green flag dropped, Wonderling (3J) would keep the early lead with Schneider (1ST) in tow. Wonderling (3J) and Schneider (1ST) would make incidental contact with each other coming off of turn two, which caused damage to the left side of the 1ST, but Schneider (1ST) would still be hot on the heels of Wonderling (3J). The first caution of the event would come on lap seven, slowing the pace for the 60M of Mollick, who spun out low in turn four. During the caution, Schneider (1ST) would have the damage to his car inspected by RUSH Officials and was given the thumbs up to continue. Wonderling (3J) would lead the restart with Schneider (1ST) in second, Robertson (20) in third, Scott Gunn, from McDonald, in fourth, and Lukon in fifth. When the field returned to green-flag action, Schneider (1ST) would briefly steal the lead from Wonderling (3J) but Wonderling (3J) would reclaim the lead at the stripe. Schneider (1ST) would fall back to third on lap 10, giving up the second spot to Robertson, while Colon Flinner (48F), from Allison Park, would move into the fourth spot after starting eighth. Flinner (48F) would move into third on lap 12, while Schneider (1ST) would fall back to fourth and on the following lap, Schneider (1ST) would fall back to fifth, giving up the fourth spot to Lukon (184). At the halfway point of the event, Wonderling (3J) was still leading with Robertson (20) in second, Flinner (48F) in third, Lukon (184) in fourth, and Schneider (1ST) in fifth. Lap 19 would see trouble for Wonderling (3J) as he tagged the wall in turn four, bringing out the caution. With Wonderling (3J) out of the race, the door was wide open. Robertson (20) would now lead the field on the restart, while Lukon (184) was in second, Flinner (48F) was in third, Gunn (14G) in fourth, and Tommy Schirnhofer (8), from Dormont, was in fifth after starting thirteenth. When the green flag waved, Lukon (184) would take the lead and Gunn (14G) would follow him into second place. Another caution would come on lap 21. Lukon (184) would choose the outside on the restart with Gunn (14G) in second, Flinner (48F) in third, Steve Dixon (65D), from Smethport, in fourth, and Schirnhofer (8) in fifth. Lukon (184) and Gunn (14G) would go side by side when the field returned to green with Lukon (184) taking the lead at the line. The event’s final caution would come with three laps to go when a car hit the wall in turn one. Again, Lukon (184) would choose the outside on the restart with Flinner (48F) in second, Schirnhofer (8) in third, Gunn (14G) in fourth, and Policz (14B) in fifth. When the green flag dropped for the final time, Lukon (184) was on a mission and wasn’t going to be beat. He would lead the remaining three laps, en route to his first Herb Scott Memorial victory. Following him to the line were, Schirnhofer (8) in second, Flinner (48F) in third, Gunn (14G) in fourth, Policz (14B) in fifth, Mike Duritsky (90J) in sixth, Justin Lamb (93X) in seventh, Schneider (1ST) in eighth, Dixon (65D) in ninth, and Jamie Wrightsman (21J) would round out the top 10. B-main winners were Wrightsman (21J) and Bill Kessler (09). Heat race winners were Policz (14B), Mollick (60M), Flinner (14B), and Wonderling (3J).

In the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series Non-Qualifiers eight-lap feature event, Jared Kane (7K) would start on the pole. Paul Jablonski (3JX), from Carnegie, would start in second, while Bobby Springer (42S), from Clinton, would start in third, Heath Close (77H), from Pittsburgh, would start in fourth, Tony White (27T), from Aliquippa, would start in fifth, and Bryan Hoffman (15H), from Scott Township, would round out the six-car field. When the green flag dropped, Kane (7K) would pull out to an early lead. Hoffman (15H) would move into the third spot on lap three with Kane (7K) still leading the field. Kane (7K) was on a rail and had a half of a straightaway lead by the fourth lap. Kane (7K) dominated the event, leading all eight laps, picking up his first PPMS win of the season. He was followed to the line by, Jablonski (3JX) in second, Hoffman (15H) in third, Springer (42S) in fourth, White (27T) in fifth, and Close (77H) in sixth.

In the PPMS Pro Stock 12-lap feature, Joel Johns (M5), from Murrysville, would start on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Mike Harris (18), from Bridgeville. Robert Betz (81), from South Heights, would start in third, and Danny Rich (67X), from Imperial, would complete the four-car field. When the green flag waved, Johns (M5) would pull out to an early lead but it was short-lived as Harris (18) would take the lead at the stripe. The caution would come out soon after as Rich (67X) spun out coming off of turn four. Harris (18) would choose the outside on the restart with Johns (M5) in second, and Betz (81) in third. When the green flag dropped, Harris (18) and Johns (M5) would drag race for the lead with Harris (18) taking it at the line. With Harris (18) leading, Johns (M5) was in second, and Betz (81) in third. They would stay that way until the caution came out with one lap to go, as Johns (M5) spun out trying to make a move on Harris (18) for the lead. It would now be a two-lap shootout with Harris (18) leading the restart. When the field returned to green, Harris (18) would keep the lead. Johns (M5) would give Harris (18) a run for his money and almost passed him coming off of turn four on the last lap but Harris (18) would lead the remaining two laps, en route to his first career PPMS victory. He was followed by Johns (M5) in second, Betz (81) in third, and Rich (67X) in fourth. The heat race winner was Johns (M5).

In the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock 12-lap feature, Marcus Simmons (68X), from Beaver Falls, would start on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Adam Ferree. The second row consisted of Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills in third, and Mike Betsch (222) in fourth. When the green flag waved, Magill (05), Simmons (68X), and Ferree (29) would go three-wide into turn one with Simmons (68X) coming out with the lead. The event’s first caution came on the second lap for debris on the track. Simmons (68X) would choose the outside on the restart with Ferree (29) in second, Magill (05) in third, A.J. Poljak (17S), from Baldwin, in fourth, and Karlee Kovacs (221K), from Carnegie, in fifth. When the field returned to green-flag action, again, Simmons (68X), Magill (05), and Ferree (29) would go three-wide into turn one and Magill (05) would spin out in turn two, bringing out the caution once again. Simmons (68X) would lead the field on the restart and go side by side with Ferree (29) when the green flag dropped. Simmons (68X) would once again keep the lead and by lap four he would start to contend with lapped traffic, but the man on the move was Casey Grumling (77X), from Elrama, after starting last. Grumling (77X) would steal the lead on lap seven and trade spots with Simmons (68X) a few times, but the night belonged to Grumling (77X) as he would pick up his second PPMS win of the season. Following him to the line was, Simmons (68X) in second, Poljak (17S) in third, Ferree (29) in fourth, Andrew Sutton (16A) in fifth, Ed Shelpman (17P) in sixth, Kovacs (221K) in seventh, Matt Bernard (15B) in eighth, Tom Anton (313) in ninth, and Magill (05) would complete the top 10. The heat race winner was Magill (05).

In the Four Cylinder 10-lap feature, Jason Romine (71) would be the pole-sitter. Craig Rudolph (5R), from Steubenville, Ohio would start in second, while Mike Kelley (6) would start in third, John Gill (19G), from Burgettstown, would start in fourth, Tanya Charlier (21), from Midway would start in fifth, and Andy Garlinger (R88), from Hopedale, Ohio would complete the six-car field. When the green flag waved, it didn’t take Garlinger (R88) long to take the lead. Garlinger (R88) had the lead by the end of the first lap with Gill (19G) in second, and Kelley (6) in third. Garlinger (R88) had a half-track lead by the fourth lap and he caught the sixth place car by the sixth lap. Garlinger (R88) was on a rail and would pick up another PPMS victory. He was followed to the line by, Kelley (6) in second, C. Rudolph (5R) in third, Romine (71) in fourth, Gill (19G) in fifth, and T. Charlier (21) in sixth. The Four Cylinders did not run a heat race.

In the Young Guns eight-lap feature, Tony Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would start on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Cameron Lambert (223). Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, would start in third and Susie Rudolph (55), from Steubenville, Ohio would round out the four-car field. When the green flag dropped, T. Magill (05) would take the early lead but it was short-lived, as S. Rudolph (55) would take the lead by the end of the first lap. Lap three had S. Rudolph (55) leading, Janas (88) in second, T. Magill (05) in third, and C. lambert (223) in fourth. S. Rudolph (55) began to lap the four-car field by lap five and would lead all eight laps of the event, en route to another PPMS victory. She was followed to the line by Janas (88) in second, T. Magill (05) in third, and C. Lambert (223) in fourth. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
