It was an early-fall evening at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for an action-packed night of racing and family entertainment when the PA Thunder On The Dirt Vintage Modifieds came to the speedway. PPMS would see six heat races and seven feature events, which included the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock makeup feature from 8.8.2020. 

 

Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would win the Hobby Stock makeup feature after he started on the pole. Les Meyers (6), from Reno and Hank Coles (47H), from North Huntingdon, would bring home the wins in the modified and sportsman divisions for the Vintage Modified Series. Logan Zarin (1Z), from Moon, would grab his second win of the season for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, while Tyler Fox (39F), from Pittsburgh, would win the regular Keystone Coach Work Hobby Stock feature. Bill Tennant (2), from Colliers, West Virginia, would get the win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and Noah Bubeck (2), from Washington, would keep his winning streak alive in the Always Safe Young Guns division. 

 

In the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock makeup feature from 8.8.20, F. Magill (05) would start on the pole. Tom Anton (64), from Jefferson Hills, would start to his outside in second place. Karlee Kovacs (221K), from Carnegie, would start to the inside of the second row in third place, and Robert Betz (22), from South Heights, would complete the top two starting rows. F. Magil (05) would keep the lead when the green flag dropped and by lap five, he had a full straightaway lead over the field. With F. Magill (05) still leading, a battle for second was brewing behind him with Kovacs (221K), S. Shelpman (17S), John Cain (06), and Cody Koteles, as they would go three to four-wide through turns one and two. By lap seven, S. Shelpman (17S) had taken over second place with F. Magill (05) still leading. Nobody would catch F. Magill (05) as he would lead all laps of the event while he picked up the win. He was followed to the line by S. Shelpman (221K) in second, Betz (22) in third, C. Koteles (1K) in fourth, Ben Anton (13) in fifth, Kovacs (221K) in sixth, Cain (06) in seventh, T. Anton (64) in eighth, Ed Shelpman (17P) in ninth, and Mike Tropeck (47T) in tenth. The heat race winners from 8.8.2020 were B. Anton (13) and F. Magill (05). 

 

The PA Thunder On The Dirt Vintage Modifieds have two different styles of cars, the Modifieds, and the Sportsman but they race both classes at the same time and they didn’t disappoint. Steve Longo (20), from Bradford, would start on the pole in his Modified, and Bobby Coles (4), from North Huntingdon, would start to his outside in second place in his Sportsman. Bill Romesburg (13) would start in third, while Jeff Manners (16), from Cherry Hill, would start in fourth, Hank Coles (47H) would start in fifth, and Les Meyers (6) would complete the six-car field in his 1980’s Mud Bus. When the green flag waved, B. Coles (2) would take the lead, but on lap one, Manners (16) would blow the motor in his Bicknell Chassis 1939 Ford Coupe which put a considerable amount of oil on the front-stretch. Once the mess was cleaned up, H. Coles (2) would choose the outside on the restart but when the green light turned out, he would spin out forcing another caution and restart. This time, Meyers (6), and Longo (20) would lead the restart as H. Coles (2) was forced to tag the field after his spinout. Another caution would come at the halfway point and Meyers (6) would choose the inside on the restart. He would keep the lead with H. Coles (47H) behind him in second. Meyers (6) would lead the remaining laps of the event and would pick up the win for the four-barrel Modifieds, while H. Coles (47H) would come in first for the Sportsman.  Longo (20) would finish third in his Modified, B Coles (2) would finish fourth in his Sportsman, Romesburg (13) would finish fifth, and Manners (16) in sixth. The heat race winners were Meyers (6) for the Modifieds and H. Coles (47H) for the Sportsman. 

 

The RUSH Late Model Dirt Series feature would start 18 cars with Tony White (27T), from Aliquippa, as the pole-sitter. Zarin (1Z) would line up outside and would start in second place. Jake Gunn (14G), from McDonald, would start in third, while Bill Kessler (09), from Freedom, would start in fourth, Justin Lamb (93X), from Findlay Township, would start in fifth, and Dan Lepro (2L), from Midway, would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag dropped, Zarin (1Z) would take the early lead with Kessler (09) following him into second place. Lap five had Zarin (1Z) still leading, Kessler (09) still in second, Lepro (2L) in third, Nico Dabecco (42D) in fourth, and eleventh-starting Ben Policz (14B) already up to fifth place. Policz (14B) would take over fourth place on the next lap and by lap eight, Policz (14B) had moved into third place behind Kessler (09) with Zarin (1Z) still leading the charge. Lap nine would bring Zarin (1Z) into lapped-traffic as he continued to pad his lead over the field but Policz (14B) was still on the move. Policz (14B) would take over second place on lap 14 as he would set his sights on the leader. Despite a run at the lead from Policz (14B), Zarin (1Z) was able to hold on and lead the remaining six laps of the event, picking up his second PPMS win of the season. He was followed to the line by Policz (14B) in second, Kessler (09) in third, Mike Duritsky (90J) in fourth, Lepro (2L) in fifth, Tommy Schirnhofer (8S) in sixth, Dabecco (42D) in seventh, Lamb (93X) in eighth, J. Gunn (14G) in ninth, and White (27T) would round out the top 10. The heat race winners were Schirnhofer (8S) and Kessler (09). 

 

In the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock regular feature, C. Koteles (1K) would start on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Fox (39F). T. Anton (64) would start in third, F. Magill (05) would start in fourth, Cain (05) would start in fifth, and Betz (22) would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag dropped, the caution-fest would begin. Fox (39F) would take the early lead but the first caution would slow the pace on lap two. Fox (39F) would take the outside on the restart and would keep the lead. The next lap had another caution and again, Fox (39F) would choose the outside on the restart. When the green flag waved, the field would go three-wide into turn one with Fox (39F) keeping the lead with C. Koteles (1K) in second, Adam Ferree (29) in third, Dave McManus (00K) in fourth, and Cain (06) in fifth. Another caution would come on lap five when Matt Benard (15) would fall off of the pace on the front straight due to a rear flat tire and he was rear-ended when Ben Anton (13) had nowhere to go. Fox (39F) and C. Koteles (1K) would lead the field on the restart and when the green light turned on, the field would go three to four wide going into turn one when about five cars got tangled up which brought out another caution. Again, Fox (39F) would choose the outside on the restart with six laps remaining in the event. Before the green flag came out, the field was warned about no passing before the cone on the restarts, but when the green flag waved, Kovacs (221K) was docked two spots by track officials for jumping the cone. A complete restart would ensue, but again, as fast as the green flag waved, the caution was back out before a lap was completed for the 06 of Cain who spun in turn four. The third attempt at green flag racing would take place and this time, the field would complete lap seven when the caution was out again. Fox (39F) would take the outside on the restart with Ferree (29) now in second, C. Koteles (1K) now in third, D. McManus (00K) in fourth, and Betz (22) in fifth. Again, the field would complete one lap when another caution would come out as F. Magill (05) hit the wall in turn four. Fox (39F), Ferree (29), C. Koteles (1K), D. McManus (00K), and Betz (22) would be the top five on the restart with eight laps in the books and four laps remaining in the event. At this point, the race was 26 minutes old with only eight laps complete. With four laps to go, the green flag would drop but track officials weren’t happy with how Fox (39F) and Ferree (29) started the race, so a complete restart would ensue. The flagman came off of the flag stand to speak with Fox (39F) and Ferree (29) to remind them of proper race-starting procedures. With four laps remaining, the green would come out for the final time in the event. Fox (39F) would lead the remaining four laps and would pick up the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock win. He was followed to the line by Ferree (29) in second, C. Koteles (1K) in third, S. Shelpman (17P) in fourth, Betz (22) in fifth, D. McManus (00K) in sixth, B. Anton (13) in seventh, Cain (06) in eighth, Kovacs (221K) in ninth, and Mike Tropeck (47T) rounds out the top 10. The heat race winners were B. Anton (13) and Betz (22). 

 

The Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder feature had Eric Reynolds (53) as the pole-sitter. B. Tennant (2) would start to his outside and in second place. Kyle Janas (88) would start in third, while Craig Rudolph (55) would start in fourth. When the green flag dropped, it didn’t take B. Tennant (2) all that long to take over the lead with Philip Bubeck (2L) following him into second place after starting ninth, and April Tennant (95) following him to third after starting fifth. The top three would remain the same until lap six when A. Tennant (95) would pass P. Bubeck (2L) for second. A caution would come on the same lap for Derek Quigley (65D) would spin out on the front stretch. On the restart, B. Tennant (2) would lead the field with his wife A. Tennant (95) beside him in second place, P. Bubeck (2L) in third place, Reynolds (53) in fourth place, and C. Rudolph (5R) in fifth place. When the field returned to green-flag conditions, B. Tennant (2) would keep the lead after an awesome restart. On lap seven, P. Bubeck and a rear flat tire but he would continue to race on it for two more laps until it shredded off of the rim on the front stretch which brought out the caution on lap nine for debris on the track. With only a few laps remaining in the event, the field would line up for the final restart with B. Tennant (2) leading the charge. He would lead the remaining laps of the event, picking up another PPMS Four Cylinder win. He was followed to the line by A. Tennant (95) in second, Susie Rudolph (55) in third, Reynolds (53) in fourth, Quigley (65Q) in fifth, Jason Romine (78) in sixth, C. Rudolph (5R) in seventh, P. Bubeck (2L) in eighth, and Janas (88) would complete the nine-car field. The heat race winners were P. Bubeck (2L) and Quigley (65Q). 

 

In the All Ways Safe Young Guns feature, John Hollister (44), from McDonald, would start on the pole. Dylan Clipp (69), from Burgettstown, would start to his outside and in second place, and Noah Bubeck (2) would complete the three-car field. When the green light turned on, J. Hollister (44) would keep the lead until lap two when N. Bubeck (2) would steal the lead. Lap five had N. Bubeck (2) still leading, Clipp (69) in second, and J. Hollister (44) in third. J. Hollister (44) would pass Clipp (69) for second on lap seven with N. Bubeck (2) still leading. N. Bubeck (2) would go the distance to keep his winning streak alive, as he led all but the first lap of the event. He was followed to the line by J. Hollister (44) in second, and Clipp (69) in third. The Young Guns did not run a heat race. 

 

Racing resumes at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway next Saturday, September 19, 2020, for the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock Invitational, presented by Zrimm’s Tire And Auto Repair, paying $1,000 to win. PPMS will also be featuring the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series, the ADMAR Pro Stocks, the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and the All Ways Safe Young Guns. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6 p.m., and the racing action will commence at 7 p.m. Adult general grandstand admission is only 15 dollars and $35 for an adult pit pass.
