shelpman wins the inaugural keystone coach works hobby stock invitational

A crisp fall breeze was in the air at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for the Inaugural Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock Invitational presented by Zrimm’s Tire and Auto, which paid $1,000 to the winner. PPMS would see qualifying, eight heat races, a six-lap dash, and five feature events. Stephen Shelpman (17S), from Pleasant Hills, would continue his winning-ways and won the Inaugural Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock Invitational. Ben Policz (14B), from Rices Landing, picked up another win in the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series feature, while Ryan Moyer (13X), from Portersville, brought home the win for the ADMAR Pro Stocks. April Tennant (95), from Colliers, West Virginia, got the win in the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder division, while Noah Bubeck (2), from Washington, would keep his winning streak alive in the All Ways Safe Young Guns division. 

 

21 Hobby Stocks would qualify for the Invitational and Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would set the fast-time in qualifying with a time of 24.235. Adam Ferree (29), from Jefferson Hills, was only 0.228 seconds behind Magill (05) with a time of 24.463. S. Shelpman (17S) would qualify third with a time of 24.609. Less than a second would separate first through tenth during qualifying. The Hobby Stocks would be broken into three heat races with the top two making it into the six-lap dash which would determine the top six starting positions for the main event. Cody Koteles (1K), from Stockdale would win the dash, ensuring him the pole. F. Magill (05) finished the dash in second, S. Shelpman (17S) finished in third, Ferree (29) finished in fourth, Robert Betz (22) finished in fifth, and John Cain (06) finished in sixth. Those would be the top three starting rows for the Inaugural Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock Invitational. 

 

When the green flag dropped in the 20-lap feature, F. Magill (05) would take the early lead with C. Koteles (1K) in second, and Ferree (29) in third. A lap two caution would slow the pace when Ben Anton (13) hit the wall in turn four. F. Magill (05) and C. Koteles (1K) would lead the field on the restart and F. Magill (05) would keep the lead. F. Magill (05), C. Koteles (1K), and Ferree (29) would run one, two, and three until lap seven when S. Shelpman (17S) would take over the third spot and set his eyes on the leader. By lap nine S. Shelpman (17S) would steal the lead from F. Magill (05) and he wouldn’t look back. S. Shelpman (17S) would lead the next 11 laps, en route to winning the Inaugural Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock Invitational, which was presented by Zrimm’s Tire and Auto and paid S. Shelpman (17S) $1,000 to win. Following him to the line was C. Koteles (1K) in second, Ferree (29) in third, F. Magill (05) in fourth, Marcus Simmons (68X) in fifth, Kayla McManus (00K) in sixth, Brian Hutchko (OU2) in seventh, John Cain (06) in eighth, Matt Benard (15) in ninth, and James Huff (83X) rounds out the top 10. F. Magill (05), Ferree (29), and S. Shelpman (17S) were the heat race winners. 

 

The RUSH Late Model Dirt Series 20-lap feature would start 19 cars and Bill Kessler (09), from Freedom, would start on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second place was Dave Goble (20G), from Aliquippa. The second row consisted of Christian Schneider (M5), from Warren, Ohio, in third, and Mike Reft (9R), from Whitehall in fourth. When the green flag waved, the race would come to a halt as fast as it started due to a six-car pile up in turn one. All of the drivers were okay but some of the cars, not so much. A complete restart would ensue and when the green flag dropped this round, Kessler (09) would keep the early lead but Policz (14B) was on the move from his sixth place starting spot.  By lap four, Policz (14B) was already in second place behind Kessler (09) who was still leading the charge. A caution would come on lap five when the track lights in turn three went out. Kessler (09) and Policz (14B) would lead the restart with Kessler (09) on the outside. When the green light turned on, the caution would come back out just as fast due to drivers jumping the restart. Penalties were handed out and the field would line up to give it another try. When the green flag waved, Kessler (09) would keep the lead for lap six, but Policz (14B) would take over the lead on lap seven. Lap nine had Policz (14B) leading the field with Logan Zarin (1Z) in second, Garret Paugh (03) in third, Kessler (09) in fourth, and Reft (9R) in fifth. Lap 14 would see the event’s final caution and Policz (14B) would take the outside on the restart. When the green flag dropped for the final time in the event, Policz (14B) would keep the lead, lead the remaining six laps, and pick up his fourth win of the season. He was followed to the line by Paugh (03) in second, Zarin (1Z) in third, Reft (9R) in fourth, Tim Shaffer (1ST) in fifth, Kessler (09) in sixth, Dave Goble (20G) in seventh, Tony White (27T) in eighth, Christian Schneider (M5) in ninth, and DJ Nakutis (31) completes the top 10. The heat race winners were Policz (14B), Shaffer (1ST), and Zarin (1Z). 

 

In the ADMAR Pro Stock feature, Moyer (13X) would start on the pole. Todd Weldon (45), from Monongahela, would start to the outside in second place, while AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, would start in third place, Nick Kocuba (10), from Bulger, would start in fourth place, Bill Robertson (1B), from Upper Saint Clair, would start in fifth place, and Dave McManus (114), from Elizabeth, would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag dropped, Moyer (13X) would take the early lead. Lap three had Moyer (13X) still leading, Weldon (45) in second, and Kocuba (10) in third. With Moyer (13X) still leading, lap five had Kocuba (10) now in second, Weldon (45) in third, Poljak (36) in fourth, and McManus (114) in fifth. Moyer (13X) was on a rail and would begin to lap the nine-car field on lap six. With each lap, Moyer (13X) kept expanding his lead over the field and by the end of the race, he had over a full straight away lead. Moyer (13X) led all laps of the event, picking up the ADMAR Pro Stock win. He was followed to the line by Kocuba (10) in second, Weldon (45) in third, Poljak (36) in fourth, McManus (114) in fifth, Robertson (1B) in sixth, Bill Slade (A22) in seventh, Tanya Charlier (21) in eighth, and Charlie DiLoreto (0) in ninth. The heat race winner was Kocuba (10). 

 

The Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder feature, Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, would be the pole-sitter. To his outside and starting in second was A. Tennant (95). Eric Reynolds (53) would start in third, and Andy Garlinger (R88), from Hopedale, Ohio would complete the front two starting rows. When the green flag dropped, A. Tennant (95) would jump out to the early lead. The second lap of the event had A. Tennant (95) still leading, Philip Bubeck (2L) in second, Bill Tennant (2) in third, and Garlinger in fourth. With A. Tennant (95) leading the field, the top four would remain the same for the entire event while it ran green to checkers in record fashion. Following A. Tennant (95) to the line was P. Bubeck (2L) in second, B. Tennant (2) in third, Garlinger (R88) in fourth, Reynolds (53) in fifth, Susie Rudolph (55) in sixth, Bob Quagg (16) in seventh, Zack Knight (78Z) in eighth, Lucas Weaver (11W) in ninth, Craig Rudolph (5R) in tenth, and Janas (88) completes the 11-car field. The heat race winner was P. Bubeck (2L). 

 

Five cars would start the feature for the All Ways Safe Young Guns and Dylan Clipp (69), from Burgettstown, would start on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Amanda Magill (05), from Elizabeth. Madison Clipp (44), from Burgettstown, would start in third, while Wyatt Mock (88) would start in fourth, and Noah Bubeck (2) would round out the 5 car field. When the green flag waved, N. Bubeck (2) would come from his fifth place starting spot to take over the lead on the first lap. A caution would slow the pace on lap two and N. Bubeck (2) would lead the restart with D. Clipp (69). When the field returned to green-flag conditions, N. Bubeck (2) would retain the lead with Mock (88) in second, D. Clipp (69) in third, and A. Magill (05) in fourth. N. Bubeck (2) would lead the remaining laps of the event to keep his winning streak alive. He was followed to the line by Mock (88) in second, D. Clipp (69) in third, A. Magill (05) in fourth, and M. Clipp (44) in fifth. The Young Guns did not run a heat race. 

 

Racing resumes at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile next Saturday, September 26th, 2020, with the Wee Willie White Memorial for the ADMAR Pro Stocks, presented by Zrimm’s Tire and Auto paying $1,055 to win. PPMS will also be featuring the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series with a $1,000 to win topless 25-lap feature, the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series, the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stocks, the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and the All Ways Safe Young Guns. This is the last points race of the season for all divisions. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6 p.m., and the racing action will commence at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are only $15 for grandstand admission and $35 for a pit pass.
