Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway
Cody Koteles wins the Cheplic hobby stock series race number one
Imperial, PA
After raining out on May 7, PPMS was back in action last night, Saturday, May 14. However, Mother Nature would try to derail the program for the second week in a row. With showers and thunderstorms in the area, PPMS would see a rain delay, nine heat races, and five feature events. Cody Koteles (1K), from Stockdale, would pick up the win in the Cheplic Hobby Stock Series race number one after starting P11. Kyle Lukon (184), from Burgettstown, would win the Rohrich RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature event. Brian Huchko (60H), from Mcdonald, would pick up win number two in the PPMS Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature, while April Tennant (2A), from Colliers, West Virginia, would try out a brand new car and snag the win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders. In the All Ways Safe Young Guns feature, Travis Clark (05), from Pittsburgh, would pick up the win.
The Cheplic Hobby Stock Series feature would have Adam Ferree (29), from Jefferson Hills, starting on the pole with Gary Koteles (65K), from Stockdale, starting to his outside. Starting in third was Ben Anton (13), from Jefferson Hills, and on the outside of the second row was Jonathan Koteles (2K), from Stockdale. Week one winner, Matt Benard (15) would be a scratch for the event due to transmission issues sustained in his heat race. When the feature began, the 15-car pack would go flying into turns one and two. G. Koteles (65K) would take over the top spot as the front-runners headed out of turn two as a three-wide battle for fifth place was taking place behind them. By lap six, C. Koteles (1K) had already made his way into second place after starting eleventh and he would start to battle with his father for the lead. By the end of lap seven and the start of lap eight, C. Koteles (1K) would take over the lead. At the halfway point, the top five were C. Kotles (1K), G. Koteles (65K), Ferree (29), Frank Magill (05), and Tony Magill (5). The top of the field would enter lapped traffic on lap 10, and G. Koteles (65K) would make contact with a lapped car on lap 11, which caused him to also hit the wall along the front stretch under the flag stand. Despite the contact, he did not lose his second-place position. The race would go green to checkers in eight minutes. C. Koteles (1K) would take the win with a 3.817-second margin. G. Koteles (65K) would finish second, T. Magill (5) third, Ferree (29) fourth, and J. Koteles (2K) rounding out the top five. C. Koteles (1K) would also be the hard charger coming from P11. Ben Anton and G. Koteles (65K) won the heat races.
The Rohrich RUSH Late Model feature was by far the craziest event of the night. Kyle Lukon (184) would start on the pole after coming late and being forced to tag the second heat. Starting in second was Jake Gunn (14G), from Mcdonald. The second row had Mike Reft (9R), from Pittsburgh, and Philip Bubeck (4), from Colliers, WV. When the green flag dropped, Lukon (184) would keep the early lead. Lap three had Lukon (184) still leading, Reft (9R) in second, Cole Petrelle (84) in third, J. Gunn (14G) in fourth, and Bubeck (4) in fifth. A caution would slow the pace on lap four when J. Gunn (14G) had car trouble and would not make it into the pits on the front stretch. Lukon (184) would take the inside on the restart, and when green replaced yellow, Lukon (184) would keep the lead. However, a nasty crash would occur on the front stretch at the entrance to turn one when Tom Klein (77) and Zach Gunn (17G) made incidental contact. The contact caused Z. Gunn’s car to flip several times resulting in a red light. Luckily, both drivers were okay, and the field would line up for another restart. Lukon (184) would again keep the lead. Lukon (184) would lead the remaining laps of the event which ran caution-free. 3.554 seconds was Lukon’s margin of victory and he eventually lapped the fifth-place car. Reft (9R) finished second, Petrelle (84) third, Bubeck (4) fourth, and Kassidy Kamicker completed the top five. The heat race winners were Z. Gunn and Lukon.
The PPMS Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-Lap feature was up next and Huchko (60H) would start on the pole. Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, would start in second. Steve D’Apolio (84), from Youngstown, OH, would start in third, AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, in fourth, and Heath Close (77H), from Shaler, would start in fifth. Huchko (60H) would take the early lead at the start with Kocuba (10) behind him in second. On lap three, Kocuba (10) would make a mistake coming out of turn four which allowed D’Apolito (84) to take over second place. Bad luck would come for Kocuba (10) on lap 10 when he was forced to pit because of a water-pump issue. Huchko (60H) would lead all laps of the event which ran caution-free. D’Apolito would finish in second just 2.756 seconds behind the leader. Poljak (36) was third, Close (77H) was fourth, and Mike Harris (18) completed the top five. The heat race winner was Huchko (60H).
The Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder either-lap feature would see Derek Quigley (65Q), from Roscoe, starting on the pole. A. Tenant (2A) would start to his outside in second. The second row consisted of Bill Tennant (46J), from Colliers, WV, and week one winner Lucas Weaver (11W), from California, PA. The next row had Travis Corbin (2R) and Craig Rudolph (55). It was Corbin’s (2R) first time back at the track in a race car since his crash last season. When the green flag dropped, A. Tennant (2A) would keep the early lead. The event’s lone caution would come on lap seven when a car spun out in turn two. A two-lap shootout would ensue with wife and husband April and Bill Tennant leading the restart. A. Tennant (2A) would lead the final two laps to bring home the win. B. Tennant (46J) finished second, Quigley (65Q) in third, Corbin (2R) in fourth, and Weaver (11W) in fifth. The heat race winner was A. Tennant (2B).
Last by not least was the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns eight-lap feature. Starting on the pole was Kiersten Chernik (5X), from Oakdale. Starting to her outside in second place was Travis Clark (05). The second row had Emmerson Laboon (114), from Elizabeth in third, and Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, in fourth. The third and final starting row had Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, in fifth, and Zoey Knight (78Z), from Plum, in sixth. When the green light turned on, Chernik (5X) would lead through lap two. Clark (05) would take over the lead on lap three with Laboon (114) following him into second which knocked Chernik (5X) back to third. The top three would remain the same for the rest of the event which ran caution-free. Snatchko (56) finished fourth, Kokolis (91) fifth, and Knight (78Z) sixth. The heat race winner was Clark (05).
