Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway

two first-time winners at ppms on saturday night

Imperial, PA

It was a beautiful spring evening at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile when the fastest cars on dirt came to town, as Falconi’s 412 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Series would make its first appearance of the season. PPMS would see, qualifying, seven heat races, and eight feature events, as two of the features were makeup events from May 21st, and we would produce two first-time winners. Stephen Shelpman (17S), from Pleasant Hills, would win the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock makeup feature. Emmerson Laboon (114), from Elizabeth, would snag the win for the All Ways Safe Young Guns for their makeup feature. Sye Lynch (42), from Apollo, would set the fast-time in qualifying for the Falconi’s 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Series with a time of 17.626. However, George Hobaugh (40) was right behind him with a time of 17.871, and Hobaugh would pick up the win for the Falconi’s 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Series. In the Rohrich RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, Cole Petrelle (84), from Follansbee, West Virginia, would pass Tim Shaffer (45) on the last lap to steal the win. One of the other first-time winners was Jordan Perkins (13J), from New Castle, as he brought home the win for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks. 2021 Defending Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock champion, Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would get his first win of the season on Saturday night, while Matt Knight (71), from Plum, would get his first career win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders, and Travis Clark (05T), from Pittsburgh, would snag another win for the All Ways Safe Young Guns.

In the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock makeup feature, S. Shelpman (17S), Jonathan Koteles (2K), and Logan Koteles (64K), would go three-wide through turn 2 battling for the lead. However, the first lap wouldn’t get scored before the caution flag was out. The field would have to line up again for a complete restart. This race was plagued with cautions, and only five of the 12 starting cars would remain at the end of the event. S. Shelpman (17S) would go the distance to pick up the win. He was followed to the line by Logan Koteles (64K) in second, Matt Benard (15) in third, Tony Magill (5) in fourth, and Marc Corio (14) would complete the top five.

Emmerson Laboon (114) would come from her third-place starting position to take over the lead on the start during the All Ways Safe Young Guns makeup feature. Travis Clark (05T) would come from his last place starting spot to settle into second place behind Laboon (114). At first, it appeared that Clark (05T) would catch Laboon (114), but she was able to distance herself from the field to pick up her second win of the season. Clark (05T) finished second, Kiersten Chernik (5X) finished third, Sadie Snatchko (56) finished fourth, and Zoey Knight (78Z) finished 5th.

The Falconi’s 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Feature had Brandon Matus (13), from Wampum, starting on the pole. But when the green flag dropped, Carl Bowser (11) would take over the lead. Lap four had Bowser (11W) still leading with Hobaugh (40) in second and B. Matus (13) in third. A lap seven caution would slow the pace and re-rack the field. When green replaced yellow, Hobaugh (40) would take the lead away from Bowser. (11W). The event’s last caution would come at the halfway point but Hobaugh (40) would keep the lead and go the distance with Lynch (42) finishing second, Bowser third, B. Matus (33) fourth, and Dan Kuriger (08) rounded out the top five.

The Rohrich RUSH Late Model Feature had the legend Tim Shaffer (45), from Aliquippa, starting on the pole. When the green flag dropped, Shaffer (45) would take off with the early lead while Petrelle (84) would settle in behind him in second place. Petrelle (84) would begin to make up distance on the leader as lap after lap peeled off. Petrelle (84) would make several attempts to take the lead away from Shaffer (45), but Shaffer (45) kept shutting the door to keep his lead. It looked like Shaffer (45) was going to win the event when Petrelle (84) made one last attempt for the lead on the white flag lap, and Petrelle (84) would succeed to score his first Rohrich RUSH Late Model win of the season. Shaffer (45) was second, Dave Gobel (20G) in third, Noah Bubeck (4) in fourth, and Bryan Hoffman (15H) was fifth.

In the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock 15-lap feature, Frank Magill (05) would start on the pole and he would keep his lead when the green light turned out. The event’s lone caution would come on lap two for debris in turn two. F. Magill (05) would choose the inside on the restart as he lined up next to his younger brother Tony (5). When green replaced yellow, F. Magill (05) would keep his lead over the field. F. Magill (05) would lead the remaining laps of the event to pick up his first win of the season. He was followed by Jonathan Koteles (2K) in second, Matt Benard (15) in third, T. Magill (5) in fourth, and Justin Clark (02) in fifth.

The Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-lap feature had Jordan Perkins (13J) starting on the pole. When he led the field to the green flag, he was able to keep his lead with Steve D’Apolito (84) following him into second place. Six-starting Brian Huchko (60H) would make his way all the way up to second place as he began to reel in the leader but it wasn’t enough. Perkins (13J) would go the distance to score his first career win. Huchko (60H) was second, Cody Koteles (1K) was third, AJ Poljak (36) was fourth, and D’ Apolito (184) completed the top five.

The Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder eight-lap feature would have Lucas Weaver (11W) starting on the pole. When the green flag dropped, Weaver (11W) would keep the lead, but it was short-lived, as Knight (71) would take over the lead. Knight (71) would hold off the four cars behind him and go the distance, picking up his first career win. Weaver (11W) was second, Craig Rudolph (5R) was third, Susie Rudolph (55) was fourth, and Derek Quigley (65Q) completed the five-car field.

Zoey Knight (78Z) would start on the pole for the All Ways Safe Young Guns eight-lap feature. When the green flag waved, Travis Clark (05T) would take over the lead. With Clark (05T) still leading, the eight-car field began to spread out on the track a little bit. Sadie Snatchko (56) and Kiersten Chernik (5X) made incidental contact coming through turn four and they both hit the wall pretty hard. They were both okay and the field would lineup for a restart with Clark (05T) as their leader. The green flag would wave for the final time in the event and Clark (05T) would go the distance to pick up another PPMS Young Guns win. Gavin Kokolis (91) would finish second, Knight (78Z) third, Abby Gindlesperger (05) fourth, and Tyler Hollister (44) completed the top five.
