wonderling WINS THE 2022 BILL HENDREN MEMORIAL

Imperial, PA

A cold fall chill was in the air on Friday night at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile for the RUSH Touring Series Bill Hendren Memorial. With Hurricane Ian knocking on the door, track officials decided it was best to cancel the second half of the weekend and increase the purse, as well as the lap count for the Bill Hendren Memorial on Friday evening. PPMS would see qualifying, seven heat races, two b-mains, a six-lap dash, and six feature events. Jeremy Wonderling (3J), from Wellsville, NY, would pick up his first win in 14 months for the RUSH Touring Series when he made a late-race pass to outdistance a stout field of RUSH Late Models. Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would get his first career RUSH Late Model win when he won the 10-lap Non-Qualifiers feature. Chris Schneider (55), from Lower Burrell, won the inaugural Bob Walters Memorial for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Matt Benard (15), from Oakdale, would get his third win of the season for the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stocks. Matt Knight (71), from Plum, won the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder feature, and Emmerson Laboon (114), from Elizabeth, would pick up another win for the All Ways Safe Young Guns.

41 RUSH Late Models were signed into PPMS on Friday night, as they were set to do battle for night one of the Bill Hendren Memorial. After qualifying, the field was broken into four heat races with the top five from each heat making the big show as the rest would go to one of two b-mains, and the top two from each heat entering the redraw for the dash. Kyle Lukon (184), from Burgettstown, would go on to win the dash and claim the pole position in the 50-lap main event. Starting on the outside pole was Ben Policz (14B), from Rices Landing. Joe Martin (10S), from Punxsutawney, would start in third, and Michael Duritsky (90J), from Masontown, would start on the outside of row two. At the start of the event, Lukon (184) would hang onto the early lead with Policz (14B) following him into second and Duritsky (90J) third. By lap seven, the front-runners were already into lapped traffic with Lukon (184) leading the way. The event’s first caution would slow the pace and re-rack the field for a car that didn’t make it into the pits on the front stretch. Lukon (184) would choose the outside on the restart which put Policz (14B) to his inside. When green replaced yellow, Lukon (184) would keep his lead over the field. Another caution would come just five laps later on lap 16 when Matt Latta (21L) and Tim Shaffer (45) got tangled up on the turn-two exit. A few other cars would spin out trying to avoid the collision. All drivers were okay and once the mess was cleaned up, the field would return to green flag conditions. The third caution in nine laps would come on lap 20 when Phillip Bubeck (4) had trouble on the backstretch. Lukon (184) took the outside on the restart, however, Policz (14B) had to go to the pits under caution due to a flat tire. This allowed Wonderling (3J) to restart on the inside of Lukon (184). When the green flag waved, Lukon (184) would keep his lead. Wonderling (3J) would settle into second behind the race leader and Michael Norris (N1) would climb to P3 on that restart. On lap 28, the front runners would begin to contend with lapped traffic, but another caution came on lap 34 when Zach Gunn (17G) had a flat tire on the backstretch. Lukon (184) and Wonderling (3J) would restart one and two respectively and keep their spots when the green light turned on with Ben Scott (80) moving up to third. With 10 laps remaining in the event, Wonderling (3J) began to put pressure on Lukon (184) for the lead. Lukon (184) would hold him off for several laps, however, on lap 45, Wonderling (3J) would take over the lead putting Lukon (184) in second. Wonderling (3J) would lead the remaining five laps of the event and go on to win the 2022 Bill Hendren Memorial taking $10,000 to the bank. He was followed by Lukon (184) in second, Scott (80) in third, Norris (N1) in fourth, and Brandon Burgoon (5X) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Michael Duritsky (90J), Cole Petrelle (84P), Jeremy Wonderling (3J), and Ben Policz (14B). The b-main winners were Dave Goble (20G), and Dan Lepro (2L).

In the RUSH Late Model Non-Qualifiers feature, Ashton Briggs (11A), from Erie, would start on the pole. Starting to his inside in second was Brandt Graham (14), from Orono, Ontario. The second row had Breyton Santee (9S), from Conneaut, Ohio, starting third, and Colby Beighey (36), from Taylor, Michigan, starting in fourth. When the green flag waved, Graham (14) would take the early lead with Frank Magill (05) settling in behind him in second by lap two. Magill (05) would take over the lead on lap four and he would increase his lead over the field continuously for the next six laps to the checkered flag for his first career RUSH Late Model win. He was followed by Graham (14) in second, Beighey (36) in third, Briggs (11A) in fourth, and Santee (9S) rounding out the top five.

Tyler Dietz (00), from Pittsburgh, would set the fast time for the Penn Ohio Pro Stock inaugural Bob Walters Memorial. Paying $1,042 to win, the 20-lap feature had Chris Schneider (55) starting on the pole with Dietz (00) to his inside in second. The second row had Jason Fosnaught (J19), from Tarentum, starting in third, and Daryl Charlier (74), from Midway, starting in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Schneider (55) would pull away with the earlier lead as Charlier (74) would settle in behind him in second. On lap two, Dietz (00) would take second away from Charlier (74) as Schneider (55) led the field. Lapped traffic would come into play on lap nine but it didn’t matter as Schneider (55) would lead all laps of the event and cruise to victory in the caution-free event. Following him to the line was Deitz (00) in second, Charlier (74) in third, Cody Koteles (1K) in fourth, and Christian Schneider (56) would close out the top five. The heat race winners were Tyler Deitz (00) and Chris Schneider (55).

The Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock feature event would start nine cars with Gary Koteles (65K) starting on the pole. Robert Betz (22), from South Heights, would start in second while Garrett O’ Patchen (25), from Pittsburgh, would start in third, and Matt Benard (15) would start in fourth. At the start of the event, Koteles (65K) would take off with the early lead, and Benard (15) would settle in behind him in second. Benard (15) would take over the lead on lap four but the caution would come out and slow the pace on lap seven when a car had trouble in turn two. On the restart, the field wouldn’t complete a lap before the red flag was out for a car that had trouble trying to enter the pits via the turn-one pit entrance, as the car would have a small fluid fire that super snuffers were easily able to extinguish. The driver was okay and with the mess cleaned up, the field would return to green flag conditions. Despite a late race caution, Benard (15) would lead the remaining laps of the event and he would pick up his third Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock win of the season. He was followed by Koteles (65K) in second, O’Patchen (25) in third, Joe Brown (74) in fourth, and Jacob Wiser (0U2) would round out the top five. The heat race winner was Benard (15).

In the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder six-lap feature, Craig Rudolph (5R), from Steubenville, Ohio, would start on the pole. John Gill (19G), from Burgettstown, would start in second, and Matt Knight (71) would complete the starting field. When the green flag dropped,  a three-wide battle for the lead would take place as they headed into turns one and two with Rudolph (5R) having the lead at the line. Knight (71) would take the lead away from Rudolph (5R) on lap three and he would lead the remaining three laps in the event picking up another Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder win. Gill (19G) would finish second, and Rudolph (5R) finished third. The Four Cylinders did not run a heat race.

Zoey Knight (78Z), from Plum, would start on the pole for the All Ways Safe Young Guns eight-lap feature. Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, would start in second while, Emmerson Laboon (114) would start in third, Abby Gindlesperger (05), from Jefferson Hills, would start in fourth, and Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, would round out the five-car field. At the start of the event, Snatchko (56) would come away with the early lead but it was short-lived as Laboon (114) would pass her for the lead at the flag stand. Laboon (114) would lead the remaining laps of the event and go on to pick up another Young Guns win. She was followed by Snatchko (56) in second, Gindlesperger (05) in third, Kokolis (91) in fourth, and Knight (78Z) would complete the top five. The Young Guns did not run a heat race. The Young Guns usually don’t race for money, however, Mark Snatchko got together a few sponsors for Friday’s race and they donated as follows: Our Cars Auto Detailing And Tire Sales, Real Nutz Vodka, and WM. Prescott Roofing And Remodeling each donated $200. Biber’s Garage LLC, Speedy’s Express Service, Molly Snatchko/Penyak Travel, and Eberhardt Construction each donated $100. Cletus Motorsports donated $50. Thank you to all who contributed.
