schirnhofer finds victory lane again at PPMS (Full Write Up & Results For 6.17.23)
Imperial, PA (June 18, 2023)
A beautiful summer evening would paint the landscape at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile on Saturday night for a TMT Transport Action Event. PPMS would see seven heat races and five feature events. Tommy Schirnhofer (8S), from Dormont, would lead all 20 laps of the Rohrich RUSH Late Model feature, picking up his first win of the season. Chris Schneider (55), from Lower Burrell, would pick up the win for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Stephen Shelpman (17P), from Pleasant Hills, would get another win for the Hobby Stocks. Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, would pick up his second win of the season for the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders, and Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, would make a last lap pass coming to the checkered flag to pick up his second win of the season for the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns.
The Rohrich RUSH Late Models were broken into two heat races with the top four from each heat entering the redraw for the 20-lap feature event. Schirnhofer (8S) would redraw the number one spot and start on the pole for the feature. Starting to his outside and in second was Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills. The second row consisted of Mike Reft (9R), from Pittsburgh, and Brandon Burgoon (5X), from McDoanld, both starting third and fourth respectively. When the green flag dropped, Schirnnhofer (8S) would keep the early lead. Lap three had Schirnhofer (8S) still leading, Reft (9R) in second, and Burgoon (5X) in third. At the halfway point, Schirnhofer (8S) continued to increase his lead over the field with Burgoon (5X) now in second and Michael Norris (N1), from Sarver, now in third. Schirnhofer (8S) would lead all laps of the event and go on to pick up his first win of the 2023 season. Following him to the line was Burgoon (5X) in second, John Mollick (4J) in third, Ben Policz (14B) in fourth, and Frank Magill (05) would complete the top five. The heat race winners were Magill (05) and Mollick (4J).
The Penn Ohio Pro Stocks would also be broken into two heat races with the top three from each heat making the redraw. Nick Kocuba (10) would redraw P1 and start on the pole in the 15-lap feature event. Starting to his outside and in second was AJ Poljack (36), from Baldwin. When the green flag dropped, Kocuba (10) would take the early lead, but by the second lap, Schneider (55) would come from his P4 starting spot and take over the lead. Lap five had Schneider (55) and Poljak (36) still one and two, while Cody Koteles (1K) was in third, Kocuba (10) was in fourth, and Dale Tuche (310), from Cheswick, was in fifth. Eventually, Schneider (55) would enter lapped traffic which assisted him with distancing himself over the field. The event would go green to checkered in record fashion with Schneider (55) winning in dominating fashion. He was followed by Poljak (36) in second, Koteles (1K) in third, Kocuba (10) in fourth, and Jackson Billyk (5) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Poljack (36) and Schneider (55).
The Hobby Stocks would also play host to two heat races with the top four from each heat entering the redraw for the top eight starting spots in their 15-lap feature. Shelpman (17P) would redraw number one and start on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second was Logan Koteles (64K), from Stockdale. The second row consisted of Marc Corio (14), from South Fayette, and Matt Benard (15), from Oakdale, starting third and fourth respectively. When the green flag waved, Shelpman (17P) would keep the early lead. Lap two had Shelpman (17P) still leading, L. Koteles (64K) in second, Benard (15) in third, and Corio (14) in fourth. On the next lap, Corio (14), Jonathan Koteles (2K), and last week’s winner, Garrett O’Patchen (25) would go three wide as they battled for the fourth spot coming through turn two. By the fifth frame, Shelpman (17P) had a half of a straightaway lead over the field but the event’s only caution would come on the same lap and they would rerack the field. Shelpman (17P) chose the outside on the restart and would keep his lead when green replaced yellow. Shelpman (17P) would eventually regain his half of a straightaway lead and then some. He led all laps of the event and would go on to pick up another PPMS Hobby Stock win. He was followed by L. Koteles (64K) in second, Benard (15) in third, O’Patchen (25) in fourth, and Adam Feree (29) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Shelpman (17P) and L. Koteles (64K).
The Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders would run a feature only and Susie Rudolph (5R), from Steubenville, Ohio, would start on the pole. Kyle Janas (88) would start to her outside and in second place, while Dale Grubbs Jr (66), from Grubbsdale, would start in third, and last week’s winner, Tyler Hollister (69), from McDonald, would complete the four-car field. When the green flag dropped in their 12-lap feature, Janas (88) would come away with the early lead. Janas (88) would lead all laps of the event en route to picking up his second Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder win. He was followed by Grubbs Jr (66) in second, Hollister (69) in third, and Rudolph (5R) in fourth.
Last but not least were the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns 10-lap feature and it was the best race of the night. Paige Jones (67J), from Bakersfield, California, would start on the pole. Starting to her outside and in second was Sumara Weaver (112W), from Daisytown, while Gavin Kokolis (91) would start third, and Kiersten Chernik (5X) would start fourth. When the green flag waved, Weaver (112W) would take the early lead. Lap two had Weaver (112W) still leading, Chernik (5X) now in second, Jones (67J) in third, and Kokolis (91) in fourth. Chernik (5X) would pressure Weaver (112W) for the lead several times throughout the event but Weaver (112W) was able to maintain her lead over the field. At the halfway point, it was Weaver (112W), Chernik (5X), and Kokolis (91) running one, two, and three. With two laps remaining, Chernik (5X) would take over the lead. However, Kokolis (91) had other plans as they exited turn four heading to the checkered flag, as he would ride the high side of the track, drag race Chernik (5X) to the checkered, and beat her to the line for his second win of the season. Chernik (5X) would finish a close second, Weaver (112W) in third, Jones (67J) in fourth, Zoey Knight (78Z) in fifth, and Cheyenne Hollister (29M) would round out the six-car field. The heat race winner was Chernik (5X).
