perigo shows lewis who the boss is at ppms (Write Up & Results For 7.1.23)
Imperial, PA
After a week off, drivers, race teams, and fans alike would congregate at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile to get the second half of the 2023 racing season underway. While Mother Nature took most tracks in the tri-state area hostage, PPMS would see qualifying, eight heat races, and seven feature events.
Carmen Perigo (21), from Stoystown, would chase down race leader Ricky Lewis (41) and make a late-race pass to pick up the win in the BOSS Sprint Car Series 25-lap feature event. Kole Holden (2), from Tiona, would pick up the win for the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds, while Brandon Burgoon (5X), from McDonald, would lead all 20 laps in the Rohrich RUSH Late Model feature to bring home the win. AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, would get the win for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Stephen Shelpman (17P) made another notch in the win column for the Hobby stocks, while Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, got his second win in a row for the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and Gavin Kokolis (91) also made it two in a row for the All Ways Safe Young Guns.
14 BOSS Wingless Sprint Cars would signup to do battle as they made their lone appearance at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile on Saturday evening. Isaac Chapple (6), from Willow Branch, Indiana, would set the overall fast-time clocking in at 20.377. Cody Gardner (9G), from Wilmington, Ohio, was only 0.311 seconds behind Chapple (6) with a time of 20.688. Once qualifying was finished, they were broken into two heat races with the top three from each heat redrawing for the top six starting spots in their 25-lap feature event.
Ricky Lewis (41), from Ventura, California, would start on the pole with Lee Underwood (24L), from Troy, Ohio, starting on his outside. Brian Ruhlman (49), from Clarklake, Michigan, would start on the inside of row two, as Perigo (21) would start on the outside in P4. When their green flag waved, Lewis (41) jumped out to an early lead as the field thundered into turns one and two. Lap four had Lewis (41) still leading, Perigo (21) in second, and Chapple (6) in third. By lap 5, Lewis (41) had already built half of a straightaway lead over the field. By lap eight, Lewis (41) was already into lapped traffic and now had Perigo (21) on his bumper. Lewis (41) and Perigo (21) would run one and two for most of the event until Perigo (21) was able to make the pass for the lead late in the event. The race went green to checkers in record fashion with Perigo (21) picking up his fifth BOSS Sprint Car win of the season. Lewis (41) would finish second, Chapple (6) third, Korby Kayslen (1H) fourth, and Paul Dues (87) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Lewis (41) and Dues (87).
The RUSH Sportsman Modifieds 15-lap feature had Kole Holden (2) starting on the pole with Chelsie Kreigisch (10), from Ellwood City starting on the outside. The second row consisted of Jacob Jordan (28J), from Aliquippa, starting third, and Lucas Canon (2LC), from Sharpsville, starting fourth. When the green flag waved, Holden (2) would take the early lead. The RUSH Sportsman Modified feature would also run green to checkers with Holden (2) picking up the win. Kreigisch (10) finished second, Jordan (28J) third, and Canon (2LC) would complete the four-car field. The RUSH Modifieds did not run a heat race.
The Rohrich RUSH Late Model 20-lap main event was up next which had Brandon Burgoon (5X) starting on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second was Zach Gunn (17G), from McDonald. When the green flag waved, Burgoon (5X) would take off with the early lead. With Burgoon (5X) still leading the field, a three-wide battle for second was taking place between Tom Klein (77), Cole Petrelle (184), and Zach Gunn (17G) with Petrelle (184) coming away with it. By lap nine, Burgoon (5X) had a whole straightaway lead over the field but a lap 13 caution would slow the pace and rerack the field. Burgoon (5X) took the inside on the restart but track officials called a “no-start” and Burgoon (5X) was issued a warning for starting early. On the next attempt at replacing yellow with green, the field wouldn’t complete a lap before the caution was out again for a couple of cars that got together in turn four. When the green flag waved for the final time in the event, Burgoon (5X) would pick up where he left off and keep his lead with five laps remaining. Burgoon (5X) would lead all laps of the event en route to another Rohrich RUSH Late Model win. He was followed by Tim Shaffer (45) in second, Jake Gunn (14G) in third, Tony Musolino (42) in fourth, and Brian Huchko (60H) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Tom Klein (77) and Kassidy Kamicker (72B).
In the Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-lap feature, AJ Poljak (36) would be the pole-sitter. Starting to his outside and in second was Dale Tuche (310), from Cheswick. At the start of the event, Poljak (36) would pull away with the early lead with Tuche (310) in tow. The event ran green to checkers in record time with Poljak (36) picking up another PPMS Penn Ohio Pro Stock win. He was followed to the line by Jason Fosnaught (25) in second, Nick Kocuba (10) third, Cody Koteles (1K) fourth, and Tuche (310) would round out the top five. The heat race winner was Kocuba (10).
The 15-lap Hobby Stock feature was up next and had Tom Anton (64A), from Jefferson Hills, starting on the pole. Leroy Brown (40B), from Aliquippa, would start in second, while Jonathan Koteles (2K) would start in third, and Logan Koteles (64K) would start in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Anton (64A) would have the early lead but Garrett O’Patchen (25) would have the lead at the line on lap one. Lap three had O’Patchen (25) still leading, Anton (64A) still in second, and Shelpman (17P) now in third. Shelpman (17P) would take over the lead on the next lap and begin to distance himself from the field. Shelpman (17P) would lead the remaining laps of the event and go on to pick up another PPMS Hobby Stock win. Following him to the line was O’Patchen (25) in second, L. Koteles (64K) in third, Jonathan Koteles (2K) in fourth, and Leroy Brown (40B) rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were L. Koteles (64K) and O’Patchen (25).
In the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder 10-lap feature, Kyle Janas (88) would start on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second was Levi Maskal (301), from West Sunbury. Susie Rudolph (5R), from Steubenville, Ohio, would start in third, and Tyler Hollister (69), from McDonald, would start in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Janas (88) would claim the lead with Maskal (301) in tow. The 10-lap event would run caution free with Janas (88) picking up his second win in a row. Maskal (301) finished second, Rudolph (5R) third, and Hollister (69) fourth. The Four Cylinders did not run a heat race.
Last but not least was the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns 10-lap feature and Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, would start on the pole. Starting to her outside and in second was Kiersten Chernik (5X), from Oakdale. When the green flag dropped, Snatchko (56) would take the early lead. She would lead until lap three when Chernik (5X) took it over. Chernik (5X) would lead the next few laps until Kokolis (91) took the lead on the outside with four laps to go. Kokolis (91) would lead the remaining four laps of the event and go on to pick up his second All Ways Safe Young Young Guns win in a row. Chernik (5X) would finish second, Snatchko (56) third, Zoey Knight (78Z) in fourth, and Evan Strouse (54) would complete the top 10. The heat race winner was Chernik (5X).
