shelpman wins round one of the stephen w johnson triple crown for the hobby stocks (Full write up & results)

Imperial, PA (July 23, 2023)

After a week off due to rain, Mother Nature provided fans and race teams alike with picture-perfect weather for the first round of the Stephen W Johnson Triple Crown for the Hobby Stocks during the TMT Transportation Night At The Races Action Event.

PPMS would see seven heat races and five feature events, plus a beautiful display of some of the TMT Transportation trucks. Stephen Shelpman (17P), from Pleasant Hills, would continue to dominate in the Hobby Stock division and he would go on to win the first round of the Stephen W Johnson Triple Crown for the Hobby Stocks. Brandon Burgoon (5X), from McDonald, would pick up another win for the Rohrich RUSH Late Models, while Kole Holden (2), from Tiona, would get another win for the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds. Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, would also continue to dominate in the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder feature, picking up another win, while Abby Gindlesperger (05), from Jefferson Hills, got the win for the All Ways Safe Flagging & Traffic Control Young Guns.

Adam Ferree (29), from Jefferson Hills, would start on the pole for the 20-lap first round of the Stephen W Johnson Triple Crown for the Hobby Stocks. Starting to his outside was Leroy Brown (40B), from Aliquippa, while Karlee Kovacs (221K), from Carnegie, would start in third, and starting to her outside in fourth was Marc Corio (14), from South Fayette. When the green flag dropped in their 20-lap feature event, Ferree (29) would get out in front with the early lead with Shelpman (17P) coming from his P7 starting spot to take over third, and then eventually second place. Shelpman (17P) would then take over the lead early in the event. By lap seven, the front runners would enter lapped traffic with Shelpman (17P) leading the charge and Matt Benard (15) from Oakdale was hot on his heels in second. At the halfway point, it was Shelpman (17) leading the field with Benard (15) in second and Ferree (29) in third. A lap 11 caution would slow the pace and reset the field when Cole Cochran (72) spun out on the front stretch after tagging the wall. Cochran (72) was okay, but his car needed help off of the track but he would eventually come back out to tag the field. When the field returned to green flag conditions, Shelpman (17P) would retain his lead, and with five to go, the top three remained the same. Benard (15) would eventually tag the wall which put him out of the event but the night belonged to Shelpman (17P) as he would lead the remaining laps of the event and go on to pick up the win for the first round of the Stephen W Johnson Triple Crown. Ferree (29) finished in second, Jonathan Koteles (2K) would finish third, Tom Anton (64A) finished in fourth, and Joe Brown (74) would round out the top five. Tom Anton (64)A  was the hard charger and the heat race winners were Ferree (29), Logan Koteles (64K), and Shelpman (17P).

In the Rohrich RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would start on the pole, while Cole Petrelle (184), from Follannsbee, West Virginia, would start to his outside in second. Burgoon (5X) would start in third and Philip Bubeck (4), from Colliers, West Virginia, would start in fourth.

When the green flag dropped Burgoon (5X) would jump out to the early lead. By lap four, Petrelle (184) had moved into second, Bubeck (4) was behind him in third, and Mike Reft (9R) was in fourth. By lap 10, the front runners would enter lapped traffic as Burgoon (5X) was leading the charge with Petrelle (184) still in second and Bubeck (4) in third. By lap 15, the top three remained the same with Ben Policz (14B) in fourth and Tommy Schirnhofer (8S) holding down the top five. A lap 15 caution would slow the pace and rerack the field. When green replaced yellow, Burgoon (5X) would battle it out with Petrelle (184) for the lead with the duo running side by side for three laps as they would pass the lead back and forth. Petrelle (184) led laps 16, 17, and, 18. However, Burgoon (5X) was able to regain the lead when it mattered most, as he would lead the final two laps of the event and go on to pick up another Rohrich RUSH Late Model win. He was followed to the line by Policz (14B) in second, Petrelle (184) in third, Reft (9R) in fourth, and Schirnhofer (8S) rounding out the top five. Schirnhofer (8S) was the hard charger and the heat race winners were Burgoon (5X), Bubeck (4), and Petrelle (184).

The RUSH Sportsman Modifieds were up next with Chelsie Kriegisch (10), from Ellwood City, who would start on the pole. Kole Holden (2) would start in second and Lucas Canon (2LC), from Sharpsville, would round out the three-car field. When the green flag dropped, Holden (2) would take the early lead. The race would run caution free with Holden (2) leading all laps of the event and he would go on to pick up another PPMS win. He was followed by Kriegisch (10) in second, and Canon (2LC) in third. The RUSH Sportsman Modifieds did not run a heat race.

In the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder 12-lap feature, Jared Hall (40) would start on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second was John Gill (69), from Burgettstown. Susie Rudolph (5R) would start in third, and Kyle Janas (88) would round out the four-car field. When the green flag dropped, Gill (69) would jump out to the early lead. The caution would come out when Hall (40) tagged the wall which put him out of the event. On the restart, Janas (88) would take over the lead, and he would lead the remaining laps of the event and go on to pick up another Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder win. He was followed by Gill (69) in second, Rudolph (5R) in third, and Hall (40) in fourth. The Four Cylinders did not run a heat race.

Last but not least was the All Ways Safe Flagging & Traffic Control Young Guns 12-lap feature with Kiersten Chernik (5X), from Oakdale, starting on the pole. Gindlesperger (05) would start to her outside in second. Paige Jones (67), from Bakersfield, California, would start in third, while Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, would start in fourth. When the green flag waved, Chernik (5X) would jump out to the early lead with Jones (67) following her into second. Lap three would see the event’s first caution when Chernik (5X) hit the wall in turn four which put her out of the event. On the restart, it was Jones (67) leading the field and she would keep the lead when green replaced yellow. But that was short-lived as Gindlesperger (05) would take over the lead on the next lap. Gindlesperger (05) would lead the remaining laps of the event and would go on to pick up the All Ways Safe Flagging & Traffic Control Young Guns win. She was followed to the line by Sumara Weaver (112) in second, Gavin Kokolis (91) in third, Jones (67) finished in fourth, and Snatchko (56) would round out the top five. The heat race winner was Chernik (5X).
