The 34th annual jook george steel city classic is on deck at dirt's monster half mile
Imperial, PA (August 2, 2023)
Join us at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile this Saturday, August 5, 2023, for the 34th Annual Jook George Steel City Classic presented by All Interior Painting LLC for the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Late Model Flynn's Tire Touring Series.
William Thomas “Jook” George had a brief driving career himself, but as he turned to car owner he chose the #10 which he had for most of his racing career. That was in honor of his racing hero, Lou Blaney, who drove his car on a couple of occasions.
Other highlights of his career were being nominated as the Sportsman of the Year at PPMS, being nominated into the Pittsburgh Circle Track Hall of Fame, winning the track championship at PPMS in 1990 with John Beatty behind the wheel, and winning the Fall Classic in 1993 with Bill Yakin, also at PPMS. His most dominant stretch as a car owner came in the late ‘70s when Earl Teeters was his driver.
As of this morning (8.2.23), 40-plus Rohrich Rush Late Models have verbally committed to attending Saturday’s event.
Logan Roberson (17R), from Waynesboro, Virginia, dominated last year’s event after he set the fast time in qualifying (19.193), won his heat race, the dash, and then went on to win the 50-lap main event, but it didn’t come easy for him despite starting on the pole.
Roberson had lost the lead early in the event and was also put back a row for jumping a restart, but he was able to pass two-time defending Jook George Steel City Classic Champion (2020 & 2021) and local favorite, Michael Norris (N1), from Sarver, on lap 30 to retake the lead.
Despite a lap 48 caution and pressure from Kyle Lukon (184) & Tim Shaffer (45) on the restart, Roberson (17R) would hold on for the win. Lukon (184) finished second, Shaffer (45) third, Justin Chance (184C) fourth, and Mike Reft (9R) completed the top five.
On Saturday, the PPMS Hobby Stocks, and the All Ways Safe Flagging & Traffic Control Young Guns will join the Late Models, plus RUSH Non-Qualifyer feature.
