Koteles Wins the second round of the triple crown & Urey dominates the duel before the shootout this past Saturday

Imperial, Pa | 8.28.23 | For Immediate Release

While it’s better than all of the rain the area has been receiving, hazy, hot, and humid would be the name of the game at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile on Saturday night as we said goodbye to August for the 2023 season and PPMS would do it in style.

A vendor show would greet race fans as they would enter the speedway grounds at the grandstand ticket booth. On top of the vendor show, it was time for the annual kids bike races with this year’s event being the biggest in recent memory as PPMS would giveaway 10 bicycles with some other prizes and candy handed out to all kids that participated.

Two special racing events would headline this year’s festivities with the “Wee” Willie White Memorial which was also round two of the Steven W Johnson Triple Crown for the PPMS Hobby Stocks. The Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders played host to the second special event as they ran “The Duel Before The Shootout” with the 2nd Annual Sport Compaq Shootout only a few weeks away.

PPMS would see five heat races, a four-wide salute, a firework display, and seven A Main Feature events.

It was deja vu for Logan Koteles (64K), from Stockdale, as he would make another late race pass to steal the win off of Stephen Shelpman (17P), from Plesant Hills in the 20-lap second leg of the Steven W Johnson Triple Crown “Wee” Willie White Memorial for the Hobby Stocks.

Matt Urey (501), from Oil City, would get the win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders in preparation for the 2nd Annual Sport Compaq Shootout coming up on September 9.

Defending Division Champion,  AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, would pick up another win for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Brandon Burgoon (5X), from McDonald, would take home his fourth win of the season for the Rohrich RUSH Dirt Late Models, and Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, would pick up another win for the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns.

With the 2nd Annual Sport Compaq Shoot just two weeks away, 16 Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders would visit Dirt’s Monster Half Mile on Saturday evening to take place in “The Duel Before The Shootout” The 16 cars were broken into two six-lap heat races with the top four entering the redraw to determine the top eight starting spots for their 15 - lap feature event. Joe Campbell (40C), from Austintown, Ohio, would redraw P1 and start on the inside pole with Jakob Chipps (38C), from New Cumberland, West Virginia, start to his outside in second. Row two had Matt Urey (501) starting P3 and Susie Rudolph (5R), from Steubenville, Ohio, starting to his outside in P4. At the event's start, Campbell (40C) would take the early lead. However, that was short-lived as Urey (501) would take over the lead by the second frame. Lap five had Urey (501) still in the lead, Rudolph (5R) now in second, and Janas (88) now in third. While Urey (501) continued to increase his lead over the field, Janas (88) would continue to close the gap between him and second-place Rudolph (5R), and he would seal the deal on lap seven. For the next five laps,  Urey (501), Janas (88), and Rudolph (5R) would run one, two, and three respectively. The event’s first caution would come on lap 12 with Urey (501) choosing the outside on the restart with Janas (88) to his inside. When green replaced yellow, the field would only notch a single lap before the next caution as a few cars would tangle and spin out of control down the front stretch. Once the mess was cleaned up and the field reset, Urey (501) would again choose the outside on the restart but this time he had Eddie Lombardo (22) to his inside after starting P14. It would take two attempts to return to green flag action, as the first attempt was called a “no start” by race officials. Urey (501) would lead the final two laps of the event picking up the win. He was followed by Lombardo (22) in second, Janas (88) in third, Mike Kelley (6) in fourth, and Chipps (38C) would complete the top five. The heat race winners were Janas (88) and Urey (501).

15 PPMS Hobby Stocks were on hand for the “Wee” Willie White Memorial, which would double as the second leg of the Steve W. Johnson Triple Crown. The redraw consisted of the top eight drivers, four from each heat race. Shelpman (17P) would have luck on his side as he would redraw as the pole sitter for the 20-lap main event, while Matt Benard (15), from Oakdale, would start to his outside in second. Row two consisted of L. Koteles (64K) starting P3, and Tyler Fox (39F), from Pittsburgh, starting P4. Before the field could complete a lap, the event’s first yellow would slow the pace for the 2K of Jonathan Koteles as his car lost power when the green light turned on. A complete restart would ensue minus J. Koteles (2K) but he would eventually tag the field later in the event.

Once the field finally came under green flag conditions, Shelpman (17P) would have the lead at the start of lap one as  L. Koteles (64K) followed him into second, and  Fox (39F) into third.

By the fourth frame, Shelpman (17P) was still leading, L. Koteles (64K) was still in second Benard (15) in third, Ferree (29) in fourth, and Fox (39F) holding down the top five. The front runners would contend with lapped traffic eventually as L. Koteles (64K) found himself in a familiar spot, staring down the bumper of the leader, Shelpman (17P), just as he had one week earlier. With five laps remaining in the event, L. Koteles (64K) would take over the lead. However, on lap 17 the caution would slow the pace and rerack the field. When green replaced yellow for the final time, L. Koteles (64K) would keep his lead over the field and go on to pick up another Hobby Stock win but his first win in the Steven W Johnson Triple Crown. He was followed to the line by Shelpman (17P) in second, Fox (39F) in third, Benard (15)  in fourth, and Ferree (29) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Benard (15)  and Shelpman (17P).

Next up was the Rohrich RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature with defending Division Champion, Philip Bubeck (4), from Colliers, West Virginia, starting on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills. Tony Musolino (42), from Carnegie, would start in third, and Cole Petrelle (184), Follansbee, West Virginia, would start on the outside of row two in P4. When the green flag waved, Petrelle (184), Bubeck (4), and Musolino (42) would go three wide into turns one and two with Bubeck (4) coming away with the early lead. By lap three, Bubeck (4) was still leading, Musolino (42) was in second, and Petrelle (184) in third. The top three remained the same through lap nine with Burgoon (5X) in fourth, and Kassidy Kamicker (72B) holding down the top five. Lap 10 would bring the event’s first caution when a car had trouble in turn four. Bubeck (4) and Musolino (42) would lead the restart, and when the green flag dropped, track officials would call a “no start” and make the field line up for a second attempt. Attempt number two was successful with  Burgoon (5X) stealing the lead. Burgoon (5X) was on a rail and it appeared that he had the win in the bag when a lap 19 caution forced a two-lap shootout as Burgoon (5X) would choose the outside with Bubeck (4) to his inside. When green replaced yellow for the final time in the event, Burgoon (5X) would lead the final two laps picking up his fourth win of the season. He was followed to the line by Bubeck (4) in second, Petrelle (184) in third, Musolino (42) finished fourth and Kamicker (72B) completed the top five. The heat race winners were Burgoon (5X) and Petrelle (184).

The Penn Ohio Pro Stocks ran a 15-lap feature only and had Mike Harris (18H), from Bridgeville, starting on the pole with Dale Tuche (310), from Cheswick, starting to his outside in second. Poljak (36) would start in third, Emmerson Laboon (114) would start fourth, and Nick Kocuba (10) would complete the five-car field. Early in the event, Harris (18H) had the early lead. However, by the middle of the event, Poljak (36) would take over the lead. Poljak (36) would lead the remaining seven laps of the event, which ran caution-free. Harris (18H) finished second, Kocuba (10) third, Tuche (310) fourth, and Laboon (114) fifth.

Last but not least are the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns and Zoey Knight (78Z), from Plum, who would start on the pole for their 10-lap feature. AJ Mangenello (50) would start to her outside and in second place. Snatchko (56) would start third, and Sumara Weaver (112W) would start in fourth. When the green flag waved, Mangenello (50) would come away with the early lead with Snatchko (56) in tow in second. On lap four, Snatchko (56) would take over the lead. She would lead the six remaining laps, en route to picking up another All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns win. She was followed by Mangenello (50) in second, Gavin Kokolis (91) in third, Weaver (112W) in fourth, and Knight (78Z) completed the top five. The heat race winner was Kokolis (91).
