Sprint Cars and Modifieds Highlight Next Schedule Update

Dirt’s Monster Half Mile may continue to hibernate as the winter months turn cold, but work behind the scenes continues as two races were formally announced on Wednesday, December 6th.

First up is the announcement of a second winged 410 sprint car show for the 2024 racing season. The Schaeffer's Specialized Lubricants Western Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek presented by J.S. Bova Excavating will return to action on Thursday, May 30th featuring a 30 lap, $3,500 to win A-Main feature event. The top local and regional stars from Western Pennsylvania and beyond will contest one another at the largest and fastest track on the five race schedule. PPMS will host the second night on the slate, as Mercer Raceway Park will serve as the speedweek kickoff host the day prior. Lernerville Speedway, Sharon Speedway and Tri-City Raceway Park will conclude the speedweek in that respective order. 

Speedweek Director Tyler Beichner selected PPMS to host its first speedweek race in over two decades in 2022. However, the race was canceled due to inclimate weather. Mother Nature had other plans in 2023 as sunshine and 90 degree heat made for a brutal night at the speedway. Fans in attendance and those who streamed the event live on The Cushion were treated to a spirited battle between A.J Flick and former NASCAR Cup Series driver Dave Blaney. Flick was the winner of that event and ultimately went on to earn his second career speedweek championship.

Moving on, a ground-pounding addition is welcomed to the schedule as the BRP Modified Tour returns in 2024 with a 30 lap, $2,500 to win show on Saturday, May 4th. This will be the first stop for the big block modifieds since 2017, and the first Tour race since 2016. Garrett Krummert was the winner in each respective contest. “The BRP Modifieds are excited to be back at PPMS for the first time after a several year hiatus,” states spokesperson Pam Baker. Baker continued, “We look forward to having a great show there for the fans and the drivers both.”

Throughout the 45 year history of the speedway, few big block modified shows have been run. Deek Scott, son of Hall of Fame driver Herb Scott, was the winner of the very first modified show in 1979. Since then, 44 more races have been held, with names like Wearing, Lynch, King, Murdick, among others, claiming victory. The BRP Modified tour makes up 10 of those 45 total races, with the first taking place in 2009. Now in 2024, young and veteran drivers alike will have the opportunity to add their name to the aforementioned ranks.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway continues to develop its 2024 racing schedule in hopes of having a formal release in a few short weeks. The season will get under way on Saturday, March 16th with the Pot of Gold 75. The St. Patrick’s Day weekend event will feature the FAST on Dirt 410 Sprint Car Series, the ULMS Racing Series, and the SCDRA Northeast Sport Compacts.
