Frantz Dominates 3rd Annual Sport Compact Shootout (FULL Write Up & Results for 9.21.24)

If you weren’t at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile on Saturday night, you missed a complete barnburner for the 3rd Annual Sport Compact Shootout presented by Jefferson Hills Lawn Equipment featuring the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders. PPMS would see qualifying, eight heat races, five feature events, and Kid's Bike Races presented by Pack N Ship. Josh Frantz (F6), from Reynoldsville, would win the 3rd Annual Sport Compact Shootout, while Mike Reft (9R), from Pittsburgh, picked up the win in the Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Model feature. Logan Koteles (64K), from Stockdale, picked up win number six on the season for the Fuel Required Hobby Stocks, while Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, took advantage of a late-race restart when he went from fourth to first to snag his third win on the season for the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, and the “Dark Horse” Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, picked up an impressive seventh win for the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns.

Josh Frantz (F6) clocked the fastest time in qualifying for the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders at the 3rd Annual Sport Compact Shootout, presented by Jefferson Hills Lawn Equipment, with a lap time of 25.201. After winning the first heat race, he would start on the pole in the 15-lap main event with Camden Frantz (158) flanked to his outside starting in second. Jacob Chipps (38D), from New Cumberland, West Virginia, would start in third, and Cameron Hollister (44), from McDonald, would start in fourth. At the start of the event, J. Frantz (F6) would take off with the early lead. Lap three had J. Frantz (F6) still leading the field with Chipps (38D) now in second and C. Hollister (44) now in third. Lapped traffic would come into play already on lap six, but a lap 10 caution for debris on the track would force a re rack of the field for the restart. When green replaced yellow, J. Frantz (F6) would retain his lead over the field. Despite another caution on lap 13, J. Frantz (F6) would win the 3rd Annual Sport Compact Shootout, presented by Jefferson Hills Lawn Equipment. Following him to the line was Ricky Weaver (21) in second, Tyler Hollister (69) in third, Chipps (38D) in fourth, and C. Hollister (44) rounded out the top five. J. Frantz (F6) and C. Frantz (F6) were the heat race winners.

In the Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, Mike Reft (9R) would start on the pole with Kassidy Kamicker (72B), from Aliquippa, starting to his outside in second. Cody Koteles (5X), from Stockdale, and Brodie Oravetz (91), from Oakdale, would start P3 & P4 respectively. When the green flag waved, Reft (9R) would take the early lead with Kamicker (72B) in tow, and Brandon Burgoon (60) in third. A lap four caution would slow the pace and reset the field for a car that had trouble in turn two. When green replaced yellow, Reft (9R) would retain his lead over the field with Burgoon (60) now in second, and Daryl Charlier (42) now in third. Reft (9R) would check off lap after lap with lapped traffic coming into play late in the contest. Despite Burgoon (60) being all over him for the majority of the event, Reft (9R) would hold him off to pick up his first win since May 21, 2022. He was followed by Burgoon (60) in second, Charlier (42) in third, Kamicker (72B) in fourth, and Bryan Huchko (60H) completing the top five. The heat race winners were Cody Koteles (5X) and Daryl Charlier (42).

In the 15-lap Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature, Ricky Steigerwald (00), from Moon, would start on the pole with Rocky Kugel (0), from East LIverpool, Ohio, flanked to his outside. Jordan Perkins (13J), from New Castle, would start in third, and Jacob Billyk (4), also from New Castle, would start in fourth. At the beginning of the contest, it would take two attempts at a green flag with Steigerwald (00) and Kugel (0) running side by side for the lead. Steigerwald (00) would have the lead at the line on lap two with Kugel (0) in second. Steigerwald (00) continued to lead the field on lap five with Perkins (13J) in second, Stephen Shelpman (17S) in third. The top three would remain the same until a lap 11 caution came for Kugel (0) who had trouble in turn three before retiring to the pits. After a few complete restarts, the field would finally return to green flag conditions with Kocuba (10) coming from his P4 restart spot to steal the lead as the cars in front of him stayed to the low side of the track in turns one and two, and he would find traction on the high side shooting him into the lead. Kocuba (10) would lead the remaining four laps in the event to go on and pick up win number three on the season. Steigerwald (00) had the runner-up spot, Shelpman (17S) finished in third, Dale Tuche (310) finished in fourth, and Tony Magill (M5) completed the top five. The heat race winners were Jordan Perkins (13J) and Sam Eichelberger (17).

Garrett O’Patchen (25), from Scott Township, would start on the pole in the 15-lap Fuel Required Hobby Stock feature with Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, to his outside starting second. Row two had Tom Anton (64), from Jefferson Hills, starting third, and Logan Koteles (64K), from Stockdale, starting in fourth. When the green flag dropped, O’Patchen (25) would come away with the early lead with Anton (64) in second, and Koteles (64K) in third. A lap five caution would reset the field with O’Patchen (25) choosing the inside on the restart. The field wouldn’t complete a lap before the caution was out again for a car that had trouble in turn one. A complete restart would ensue with Koteles (64K) taking over the lead. Koteles (64k) would lead the remaining 10 laps in the event and go on to pick up win number six on the season. O’Patchen (25) would finish second, Shelpman (25R) finished third, Anton (64) finished fourth, and Janas (88) rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were Shelpman (25R) and Koteles (64K).

Hunter Vohn (124), from Industry, would be the pole-sitter in the 10-lap All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns feature with Nathan Olenik (99) from Crescent, on his outside starting in second. Mikaylie Bottegal(48), from Steubenville, Ohio, started third, Gavin Kokolis (91), started in fourth, and Austin Siemon (29M), from Castle Shannon, completed the five-car field. Kokolis (91) would have the early lead at the start of the event with Siemon (29M) in second, and Olenik (99) in third. The top three would remain the same for the remainder of the event as Kokolis (91) would pick up win number seven on the season. Siemon (29M) finished second, Olenik (99) third, Vohn (124) fourth, and Bottegal (48) fifth. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.

Racing resumes at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile next Saturday, September 28th, 2024, for the final points race of the season headlined by the RUSH Sprint Cars plus an Action Event with the Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Models, the Fuel Required Hobby Stocks, the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders, and the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns.
